An average-to-good looking celebrity, most times, will have a larger fan base than one who looks like he was created by Michelangelo himself. Average looking dudes, as you call them, are more fan accessible. Fans feel like they could have a real shot with this average looking guy (not saying Dornan, just an example) rather than one who is so good looking, it feels too unattainable.
Kind of like the 'girl next door' theory. You have an average, to above average, looking guy/girl with a good personality that can make someone laugh--yeah, he/she could clean up. Jennifer Anniston made a career out of this.

shareI think this is a role that is defined by the description of him in the book...who looks like that?..when you read the books, you have your own idea of what he looks like...I always felt like it had to be someone not famous. I really liked Jamie, as I didn't know much about him..

Ana is supposed to be average, while Christian has to be this amazingly beautiful man, which he fails to be in this movie. Even Eric Johnson is hotter than Jamie Dornan. And Eric has more chemistry with Dakota.

share..jamie was great in Anthropoid, under rated movie. He looked like he some put muscle on for that movie too, his face was bulkier and tight and he looked bigger. i didn't reconize him until after the hour mark in that.
