A white actor needs to play Shaft...
I'm sure all the folks who say who say James Bond should be played by a black actor agree.
shareI'm sure all the folks who say who say James Bond should be played by a black actor agree.
shareDoesn't that defeat the purpose of Shaft?
shareWhy?
shareA black man living in a white man's world, who doesn't take shit from no one.
shareThat's so profound. You win
shareIf you set it in Africa, it could work with a white lead.
shareFunny, you should mention that. In the mid 60's Laurence Olivier did a version of Othello where he wore black face. It's ridiculous, but he wanted to play Othello very badly. My thought was why didn't he set it in an African country and play Othello as white with a black cast. So I guess we agree somewhat.

What do believe the purpose of Shaft is?
shareShaft is fine just the way it is. A white actor??? Surely you jest.
shareSo are the Bond films, don't you agree?
shareThe whole story of Shaft would not make it with a white actor. Shaft if the story of a black man in a white world determined to make it on is own with no obstruction or interference from anyone.
shareYou're trying to be thoughtful and reasonable with someone who is being flippant in an attempt to be "Funny" and provocative.
Good Luck!
"story of a black man in a white world determined to make it on is own with no obstruction or interference from anyone" is the log line for a movie that doesn't fit the plot line of any of the Shaft movies.
shareI totally agree!
That's a genius idea actually, but just done properly, not as a joke.
It would be awesome! Same as a black Bond, done properly could be awesome, and I cannot think of it being worse than the monkey playing Bond now in any case.
Ironic Posting 101
Don't forget there are some of us who don't think a black actor "should" play James Bond, but who are not offended by the suggestion. Who cares about the tone of their skin if they are the best actor for the role?
Shaft is a different prospect entirely as the original film deals with issues like the black power movement and racism, which made the main actor's race integral to the storyline. Bond's background or race are less relevant to the story, which is why we can accept his looks and accent changing from picture to picture.
I think a white man playing Shaft would be rightly seen as cultural appropriation. A black Bond is no more noteworthy than a female Doctor Who.
Suddenly:
Not true--the fact that Doctor Who is now a woman, and that the next Bond may be a brother, is a big damn deal to those of us (women and people of color) who are glad to see somebody who isn't a white male finally getting to play these roles. Just because you don't care (and you must be a white guy, so of course it dosen't matter to you, because you can see white guys who look just like you everywhere in the media) dosen't mean that it's not important to others. Being a black woman, it's a great thing to me to see someone who isn't white and male for a change getting a chance to occupy those spaces usually only reserved for white men until recently. It's not up to you to decide who's noteworthy and who's not---that's just your opinion.
Wow, there's some major assumptions about me there. In any case, my point was that I support diversity in casting, but go ahead and attack me for trying to provide an alternate voice to the many, many people who are outraged when actors of different backgrounds or genders take on traditionally white male roles. I swear you just can't win with some people!
shareTo the OP:
First of all, the character of Shaft was created because at the time it was created (early '70s) because other than Sidney Poitier's Mr. Tibbs, and the pair of tough streetwise Harlem detectives from the film Cotton Come To Harlem, there were very few black detective character onscreen starring in their own film series. White males had dominated the detective genre for virtually the majority of film history up to that point. So that's why your silly little statement makes no damn sense at all when you really think about it---which you obviously didn't. Also, there is no reason why James Bond has to stay a white guy, because he's a fictional character, and because this is the 21st century, and the character has changed with the times like most popular characters do. That being said, they need to hurry up and get Idris Elba for the role while he's still hot, lol.
You are correct because this is the 21st century Shaft no longer has to be black. Thanks or the support.
shareAlso since the 2019 Shaft was such a flop; it is time to change the character to it into the current time.
shareIt’s ridiculous. Shaft cannot be white because how the hell do you integrate a white guy into Harlem with a pimp attitude with the black power struggle as a background? You just can’t.
It’s like trying to make Batman black but now you gotta explain where this generations long Wayne money comes from which the Wayne Family has behind them since arriving in America. It would change too many things or flat out be stupid.
So much of the Shaft background would have to change you would have to call it The Transporter or something.
