I think breakout role can also apply to situations where the actor is taken very seriously for once, and gets many award nominations, and enters a new A-list era in their career. Like Mickey Rourke's breakout in The Wrestler (which did not last much longer after that, sadly).
Breakout role doesn't always have to mean a box office success at a young, undiscovered age.
He's a producer and cast himself as a loser in one scene.
