Another inaccurate portrayal of Greek life

I mean, come on. The hazing in this movie is a joke. For such a "high profile" and "top tier" fraternity on that campus, the fact that their members are walking around in pooka shell necklaces and cargo shorts shows the filmmakers don't have a clue about being in a fraternity. There are chapters who take things too far and they are profoundly condemned by the rest of Greek life. Attempting to paint all fraternities as one homoerotic torture chamber is just ignorant.

they're not painting all fraternities this way, just basing their film on one guy's real experience...interesting interviews with the makers (along with the writer Brad Land who went through all this for real) on youtube and they admit they are not condemning all frats, they are concentrating on one guy's story...

It's based on true experiences that the author of the memoir, Brad Land, went through at Clemson University. One thing that isn't true is that this didn't happen very recently like the movie depicts, but in the late 1990s. A lot of colleges have implemented stricter hazing rules since then, so, yes, this doesn't happen in every fraternity and it especially doesn't happen in every fraternity now. But nowhere in the movie or the book does anybody say that it does. As you say, though, there are chapters who take things too far, and Goat focuses on one of those real chapters that did:

“'If anyone says that that stuff doesn’t exist, they are woefully misinformed. This exists like air exists,' Land says. 'I have personally been in the back of a covered jeep with my head between my legs riding beside two other people and being yelled at from the front seat and being taken out to this wooded area, and I was definitely told I was going to *beep* a goat.'

The movie was about one guy's experience during the hazing ritual at one fraternity in the 90s. The movie is actually based on Brad Land's memoir.
