The Guardian was much more hostile.

Might have something to do with creator Julian Fellowes being a conservative and the Guardian being fiercely liberal?
I saw promos for this and it piqued my interest (as a New Yorker who also happens to love costume dramas and was a fan of Downton Abbey) but the promos turned me off a bit. Can't really explain why, seemed too caricaturish. I remember being disappointed with The Age of Innocence (1993) as well.
shareThe acting is a bit stilted. The gal who plays the niece sounds like she’s just memorized her lines for the high school play. The CGI scenery is not so convincing either.
I agree with this review https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/23/arts/television/the-gilded-age-review.html
[UPDATE]: I could not make it to the end of episode 1. It was like bad community theater. Terrible script, but the acting was subpar too.
