Have to say one of the best alternatives to a detective series I have seen in a long time, but will there be a second season considering the ending? No need on web
shareNope, it's a BBC 6 show season mini-series. They do fewer shows very, very well and then get out before they jump the shark. I mean really, is any 5 season show as good as the first season and is any first season as good as the pilot?

shareRiver is certainly is a one season show, the story is told, the ending was satisfying and it's over.
However there are some multi series shows that have consistently maintained their excellence. Foyles's War, is one example.
I so wish more shows were like that. My worst peeve is when a great show is cancelled without ever having an ending. I'd rather see 1 or 2 at the most short seasons, of a really good show.

shareCompletely wrong, some shows need the first season to gel, then after the first season the show gets better and better, but they do struggle at times when it goes on too long. Knowing when to end a good show is maybe one of the most important things in tv writing!

As much as I loved the show and wished the story continued, a second series would be anticlimactic and just following a formula.Stevie, as a guiding light would be a disaster, after all the entire story was about discovering her killer as well as her relationship with River.
Now if Abi Morgan could write a different story with Walker and Skarsgard playing entirely different characters, I'd tune in in a second. They did have an undeniable chemistry. Just wonderful actors!

He was willing to continue Foyle's War but they weren't and that story had a huge future."He" who? My impression about "Foyle's War" is that it was Anthony Horowitz's decision to end it, not Acorn's. They had just bought the property a few years previously and probably wanted to keep milking it. But I have no inside information, so maybe it was a mutual decision. I doubt that it was Acorn's decision alone, but of course I could be wrong. What did you read at the time?

Kinda depends whether or not everyone involved thinks it's a good idea, really, I would think. Netflix is such a huge platform, and it'll let them do just about whatever they want. So the opportunity is there.
I would love more, and I'm not concerned at all about the writer's ability to come up with a new story arc for River that'll be equally compelling, if very different. Abi Morgan is extremely creative and absolutely can handle that challenge.
But I'm not sure how much further they can take a character whose mental condition is so uncontrollable. Though he does close cases, he's really not very high-functioning otherwise, and he cannot pass for normal. The one season alone already had me thinking it was a stretch that he'd be employed with the police - and also not have been civilly committed long since.
Maybe a second season could show River learning to control his responses to the manifests a bit better. Or a lot better.
I mean, why not just "Snuffcarcass"?
How about a prequel? They could have a new murder to solve. They could explore the identity of the young woman River sees in his apartment. They could develop the Stevie/River relationship prior to Stevie's death, we could see Stevie helping River when he's down. There's lots they could still do without selling out.

Good idea. I agree a prequel could work, even with knowledge of Stevie's fate hanging over the proceedings. Yet a sequel could also work. How might declarations of love enhance Stevie's manifestation? She could help keep River on a somewhat even keel, help him work the cases. Love keeps her from fading like the rest, without quite going ghost story. Ira is a skilled and empathetic partner, so we have the three excellent leads "together" again. I'm greedy for more of a series that is so exceptionally fine.
shareWhat an excellent suggestion. I would love another season but that is from a selfish place and would be wrong for the show. But a prequel would be perfect.

i don't know seem kind of hard to develop those characters again without creating conflicts or redundancy with that season so it would be only about a case to solve, so yet another detective show.
better left where it is or followed up without nicola walker (who is amazing don't get me wrong) for a whole new arc (with the psy & police partner & wife)
A prequel would've been the best way to go I think. Seeing River and Stevie working together as partners would be great to see.

shareThe fact that he saw the characters that died during the season and someone that has been dead for over a century gives the writers a lot of latitude with River. I am not so sure about Stevie coming back, but River's psychological issues and how they relate to his being a detective could make for several interesting season's.
