Good lord! Is that really how "macramé" is pronounced in the UK? I could not believe my ears--how did this happen to a simple word derived from French?

Nice one! I had to look that one up. We had one in our family home; however, I only ever heard it pronounced chaise longue. But then my father came from a Francophone family in Montreal and most likely never heard chaise longue pronounced any other way. So I never had the chance to overhear the mispronunciation.
Still, it seems English people didn't change the spelling of macramé. They just chose to pronounce the word in a completely bizarre, alien way. So not quite the same thing. share
