I actually had the same thought, that this show has some similarities with Doctor Strange. I saw Doctor Strange with much anticipation after seeing the movie trailers. I left the movie feeling disappointed, because the entire thing felt rushed. I realized right then why I typically like TV shows so much more than movies. TV shows have so much more time to get in deep to the character development and plot development, and it's really satisfying. With big movies, especially comic book movies, it seems like theres so much pressure to turn it into this giant noisy blurry action flick, with not much substance, and to quickly tie everything together in a neat little resolution by the end.
My thoughts were that Doctor Strange would have been incredible as a Netflix series, like they've done with Daredevil. I really would have liked to see more time given for each stage of his journey. The arrogant surgeon -- the crippling accident and downward spiral -- discovering the Ancient One -- beginning training -- slowly growing and learning -- facing difficulties and setbacks -- facing enemies in combat etc. The movie zoomed through each of those stages in record time. Spent about 5 minutes on the learning process. It just didn't really feel satisfying.
I hope The Magicians doesn't get lost in the drama of this battle against this Monster, but instead spends more time on them learning and growing. I think it could end up being a good series.
