Very interesting question!!
im pretty sure that Harry stoped attending class in goblet of fire but he was able to defeat a dark immortal lord
LOL yeah that bothered me a lot how Harry never really succeeded based on his own competency as a wizard. There always seemed to be rare circumstances/helpful friends/luck that played well in his favor. I recently watched the first 2 Harry Potter movies with my little sisters and it was hilarious looking at it from an adult perspective now. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are these bright-eyed little first-years, they barely know anything, and yet they manage to get past every level of protection that Dumbledore (the so-called "Greatest wizard that ever lived") and his teachers could muster for protecting the Philospher's stone. They end up saving the day, with cheers all around! So laughable! It WAS a kids book though, so it's somewhat understandable.
Back to your question.. I would like to read the Magicians series of books before making a final choice. From what I've seen Brakebills and Hogwards (with the corresponding magical worlds they're embedded in) both have their merits.
Right now I think I would choose Hogwards. It seems to have an overall lighter, warmer, friendlier tone. I also felt like the world of HP was really well fleshed out, with SOO many magical things to do. There would be SO much to do as an adult after Hogwarts.
I do like how Brakebills magic uses intricate hand and arm motions. Although as we saw in the show, this means the hands were a primary target for battle-magic, with several of the magicians suffering horrific and crippling attacks to their hands, rendering them virtually useless within the opening seconds of a battle. No fun.
Right now, I choose Hogwarts. But this makes me want to read the Magicians books and see what else that world might have to offer.
