I kind of agree with you, but out of all the friends that I grew up with, and went to school with, only ONE person in my inner circle is a smoker. She didn't start by watching TV, but actually started when she visited family in Hong Kong for 5 weeks in the summer after her grandfather died. Her cousins, Aunt's and Uncle's smoked (both of her parents are non-smokers), and she came back to NYC with half a suitcase of Asia cigarettes and a habit that has so far lasted around 20 years. The same thing happened to her younger sister when she moved to Japan to teach English through the JET program- she came back to NYC smoking. They grew up with not a single smoker in their daily lives, but these two circumstances caused them to try smoking, and thus an addiction.
I hate seeing smoking on modern TV (especially to the extent to this show, and a few UK, Australian, and mainland European shows that I watch). The only one that I tolerate is the British show "Absolutely Fabulous" since it is about excess of every vise (smoking, drinking, drugs, binging, starvation, gluttony, you name it the 2 main characters do it). The show is a cult classic, with a recent movie. You expect Edina and Patsy to go beyond the "7 deadly sins", and although it is a comedy, Jennifer Saunders wrote the TV show and film as a satire on rich upper class women (originally from very humble beginnings), who are utter messes, trying to fit in with celebrities and old money - and in the end being made a mockery of by the people they wish to be a part of. The show is a social commentary, and the things these 2 characters ARE NOT meant to be emulated, but are more a cautionary tale.
