Excuse the ignorance.

All the cattle that were brought in for the branding......

Who did the cattle belong to?

If the cattle already belonged to the Dutton family, why weren't they already branded?

The cattle belong to the Duttons. They are branding the calves that were born in the spring. The adult cattle are already branded.
