Takes Bad Writing to a Whole Other Level

This is a show filled with unlikable characters because writers today don't know how to write any differently. Worse, they throw in tragedy after tragedy, to hope for an emotional response from the audience that never happens. Killing and wounding animals, murdered family members, suicide, sexually assaulted young girls, and much more. One right after the other, nonstop. Now that's entertainment! It's also written by people who have never been outside in nature. They'd have you believe you're constantly at risk of wolves and rattlesnakes, when in reality interactions with humans hardly ever occurred. Not on this show. It's commonplace.

This is close to the worst crap on TV and I've always liked Kevin Costner. It's a shame he's sunk to this. Even his character isn't likeable. The daughter is the worst. She's written as one of those women who believes you have to be an utter nasty bitch to converse with a man, or appear strong, but multiply that by 100. She even beats a man, and claims he's not a man himself because he finally hit back, after taking it over and over. She said a man would have simply walked away. So much for equal rights. Don't even get me started on the asinine way she behaves and the utterly childish antics she pulls.

Twenty minutes into the 3rd episode (4th hour) and I decided to give up. Even my worthless time is more important wasting it on this horrid trash. I did finish the episode, and it ended as stupidly as expected. Bodies buried in land that has never been touched, in the middle of nowhere, are about to be discovered right after burial because developers are coming. Wow. Just bad. One tragic coincidence after another. This made me reevaluate my opinion of bad writing. I didn't know the bar could go this low. Three episodes in an the amount of nonsense that has happened to certain characters is unbelievable, even for a fictious story.

I’m sorry to hear this. I had hopes that this would be good.

It's an excellent show and the only show right now where I eagerly look forward to it each week and am in place and ready to go when it airs.

It has an 83% audience score on RT and an 8.4 on IMDB. Critics are split, but audiences love it.

Fletch, I am with you. This show is great. Taylor Sheridan is great.

The series has WAY tOO MUCH drama for such a remote place. If it was done with a comedic or surreal tone like Northern Exposure or Twin Peaks then I'd buy into it, but I think they're aiming for Noah Hawley's exaggerated love letter to Fargo with this series.

It's a Taylor Sheridan show.

He's the same guy that conceived Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River. With him, you pretty much know what you're going to get: Serious stories about hard men living close to the edge.

I see it as Sheridan's take on the prime time soap opera--that does seem to be what he's going for--and when I view the show from that direction the results are just about exactly what I'd expect.

I really like the show. My only complaint is that I wish it was a little more realistic at times. The mob-style antics of the Yellowstone are a bit much at times, especially when they start killing people.

I also think that, considering the fact that it's on basic cable, they should tone the language down a bit. This isn't something that bothers me personally, but my parents watch the show too and I know it makes them uncomfortable.

this EP seemed like they were throwing everything but the kitchen sink at us,
but the first two EPs were more in line with what i think the show will continue to be like,
it didn't even seem like this EP was written by the same writer as the first two

I rather like that the characters all seem to live in a gray area. The show doesn't have good or bad guys. it just has people fighting for land at any cost. Is the drama over the top at times, sure. But there is alot at stake, the show is also trying to give a modern Wild West vibe without classic duel showdowns. So i give it a pass with the hyperbolic drama at times.

I enjoyed the story, excited for season two this summer.

Having watched with an open mind the entire first season and a few episodes into the second I agree with you completely, with the caveat that I like the acting and the visuals. The writing is terrible and the plots are so stupid I've finally stopped watching.

reply

Thank God I stopped after the 2nd ep. I liked some of the acting and hated some too. What was constant in only the 1st two eps was the terrible writing. I think it was my jonsin' for Justified that even got me past the first episode.
I thought I might revisit it and pick up where I left off but ended up forgetting all about it. Sounded like such a great premise and with Costner too!

This show is nothing but silly.
It is an inaccurate (at best) portrayal of life in Montana.

Now, 3 seasons later, did the writing get better or worse?

reply

I think it's better now but if you didn't like it going in, nothing in the later shows will change that.

Yeah, there's some writing issues but overall I base a show on how much I'm looking forward to the next episode, and Yellowstone clicks that box for me.

I really wanted to like it. I like most of the actors. The writing was so bad that I just couldn't take it. But that show Vegas was that way too. The first 3 or 4 episodes were very stupid but it matured and I ended up liking it. Was wondering if this was similar. Sounds like I needed to be hooked early if it was for me.

reply

It's still pretty much the same show as it was early on.

reply

No it's not.

Just watched the season 3 finale and I couldn't believe they would go there. It's utterly ridiculous and overboard.
