Sure do hope it's funny.
Seems like the movie with Richard Pryor The Toy.
shareI don't think it's going to be a funny movie. We are going to see Eddie do some dramatic acting.
shareI'd say it's about time. He hasn't been funny for years anyways.
shareThank you DT for giving me the biggest laugh over Eddie Murphy's career for years. I have to say that this is the first Eddie Murphy film I have wanted to see for over a decade.
Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force
It's a drama.
shareIf he gets a chance to shine like in 'Dreamgirls' it could be great.
His role in that was so overlooked. The movie was well-made anyway, but for an actor who is normally a comedian to pull off a more dramatic role is praise-worthy.
I hope this will be something that puts him on the map as an actor again, and not those endless generic comedies. That was the '80s and to some extent the '90s (and maybe a little after 2000), but that's kind of over. He either does a new standup-show, or gets into more serious roles, or not be considered something of quality anymore at all.

I meant "overlooked" as in the public doesn't really recognize it.
Even the cynical title of this messageboard alone demonstrates that people just see him as "the funny guy who always acts the same". - The same crowd would likely not watch something like 'Dreamgirls' and even I kind of watched it by chance.
And so since all they know is his comedy-flicks, people expect him to still be "the funny guy".
I think something similar happened to 'Life', with him and Martin Lawrence. Even though it is quite lighthearted and it was probably market as their typical '90s comedy-flicks, it actually has a deeper edge to it that people don't let in. Cause they just want Eddie Murphy to make him laugh because "it's Eddie Murphy".
Which is a stigma and it's unfair for an actor who has more to offer than that.
Still hoping this movie will be nice and give him that chance to shine. It definitely doesn't seem like he's doing it for his ego or something, because I just read it's some real-life story and this movie has a budget of 8 Million as well. Not exactly a guaranteed cash-grab. Looks like he's taking a new turn, and I like that.
Not all actors care about critical praise (which is a shoddy concept anyway).
He's one of the greatest money-earners ever.
He's great at kids films.
Most people like to be recognized for work they are proud of.
Shang Chi is coming. It's a start Marvel.
Eddie is a sell-out with a very big ego, but even he was kinda sad in a interview, i thnk it was ellen where he tells us he wants to stop making bad movies. His stand-up was legendary for his time and he know's he never would furfill that again so he quit right after the 2 shows to maintain his iconic status to pick up effortless roles for purely money.
shareEddie Murphy is proud, because I remember him saying he started making kids films to please his kids.
His kids mean more than faceless critics.
I don't known man, this is gonna be weird.
shareI'm bout to gets my laff on
shareThis is Eddie Murphy in a very serious dramatic role ... and he did a wonderful job with it. Honestly thinking back to his comedies I was expecting some very over-the-top drama. Not a bit of that in this movie. If anything, a very understated performance. But superb. I hope he gets an Oscar nom he deserves it big time.
shareOscar better come knocking for Eddie. This is his bet work.

The movie is not meant to be funny.
But it is a solid, good film, which has a little of everything in it, and Murphy is great.
