Finally a 'Braveheart' for my people.

First let me say as someone who grew up near South Hampton County I want to give my kudos to Nate Parker and the courage to bring this to theaters. For once I get to cheer on for a folk hero (yes Nat Turner is a hero) who was real, and looks like me. I will not be deterred by hateful and ignorant comments, nor am I trying to speak for black folks, but this is refreshing. White people have their Braveheart and biopics about their generals and war heros. Let us have this! Great performance from the entire cast. I will be watching this again and I urge everyone to support this film.

Brotha it was a great movie but, It was no Braveheart.

Parker wanted a violent movie like Braveheart but they made him take a lot of stuff out.

Comparing Sir William Wallace (or any "war hero") to a lunatic with a messiah complex who instigated the murder of a bunch of innocent people (with Turner himself only managing to kill an 18 year old girl?) Nat Turner was no better than any terrorist or gang-banger.

Which masters? The Africans who sold his parents to the white slave traders? Guess what? Slavery was legal and was practiced ALL over the world. Killing innocent people because you've been enslaved makes about as much sense as rioting and looting every time a 2 bit criminal gets shot by police.

Slavery is wrong but while it was practiced prior to being banned, was legal.

Murdering people as far as I know has always been illegal and has also always been wrong.

Do I need to be any clearer?

In what way did the helpless women and children (some babies) that Turner and his ineffectual horde killed have anything to do with slavery in America?

War is the killing of human beings. That is murder. Women and children are being killed when America is bombing other countries. If Nat Turner is no more wrong for fighting for his freedom than any other person who fights for his country.

I'm black as well but under zero circumstances I regard Nat Turner as a hero.
He was just a nutjob with the bloodlust to kill, period.
For those who are convinced that he's a hero, I honestly don't know what to say.

Sad that most of the negativity and backlash towards this film, its filmmaker and for whom the subject is about is coming from black folks. I guess this is how Nate felt when he was going door to door looking for financial backers and black celebrities said no. We have no problem glorifying Italian mobsters or western outlaws or even barbaric Romans.
