5.2 at 1700 reviews, lol.

I'm sure the fanatics will jump on here when it releases and skew this data.

reply

You mean it is not already skewed? This is ridiculous. As of this writing, over 70% of the votes are either a 1 or a 10. It has received over 1300 votes by IMDb users and the film hasn't been commercially released. I doubt seriously that the vast majority of people rating the film (or reviewing it for that matter) have actually seen it.

reply

Doesn't mean it won't end up averaging around a 6...which it may or may not deserve. So, when you looked over all 1700 reviews you found statistical evidence that the majority were either a 1 or a 10?

reply

I just checked again today and 72.4% of the votes were either 1 or 10.

If you ask me, I think it's a fair way to show you feel repulsive towards Nate Parker and Jean Celestin. There's not so much else you can do.

No, it's not fair.

Keep your social justice warrior knee jerk reactions inside your own little head.
A film should be judged by how good it is, nothing else.

Should all films by Bryan Singer get a 1 vote?

Neither of them have been convicted. Guilty until proven innocent?

reply

Jean Celestin was found guilty for sexual assault and convicted. He wrote the movie. Bryan Singer wasn't found guilty for anything.
So next time, do your research.

It's pathetic you have to get personal...I might be the one with the little head here, if that makes you happy, but I'm also the one with bigger heart!.

Drive is pure cinema.

reply

Heart does not have anything to do with rating a film, all that matter is the quality of the film.

If someone commit a crime, they go to court, if guilty they get convicted.

That does not have anything to do with the quality of a film.

RepsakTK next time you should do your research though instead of just telling others that. Jean Celestin's conviction was actually overturned when the Supreme Court ruled that his trial attorney was ineffective in defending him. I'm not taking sides here but just pointing out that you did not state the whole facts either.

reply

If more people realized they are in no position to judge anyone and kept their retarded opinions to themselves, the world would be a much better place.

Your comment really makes sense, dude.

reply

People can vote however they want to.

reply

I think many down-votes it because news and articles about the director and writers past, raping a drunk girl, has now seen the light of day. If you ask me, I think it's a fair way to show you feel repulsive towards Nate Parker and Jean Celestin. There's not so much else you can do

It would be fair if it is consistent. But for the longest people gladly support Woody Allen and Roman Polanski even knowing their situations. It would be naive to think that this doesn't have something to do with it being an aggressive pro-black film in the current state of race relations going on in America. Honestly, I think what Parker did if f'd up and he only got out on a stupid technicality but why arent people so repulsed by Woody and Polanski that they don't down vote their films.

Also, I remember even before Black-ish was released it was hovering a bit over the 5 mark just the trailer was announced.

reply

"It would be fair if it is (was) consistent"

Exactly. If the race, sex, ethnicity, religion, and sexual preference of the individual changes your view, despite all things being equal (or far too frequently, in most cases slanted in favor) of the accused and/or convicted then you are by definition being:

prej·u·diced
ˈprejədəst/Submit
adjective
having or showing a dislike or distrust that is derived from prejudice; bigoted.
"people are prejudiced against us"
synonyms: biased, bigoted, discriminatory, partisan, intolerant, narrow-minded, unfair, unjust, inequitable, colored

Woody Allen and Roman Polanski both have engaged in sexual practices (immoral and in at least one case illegal) that I personally do not approve of.

However, they are two of our greatest living Film Directors and two of the greatest Film Directors of all-time with the Masterpieces (Crimes & Misdemeanors & Chinatown being on my all-time top 10) to prove it.

The fact that they are both so called "White, Jewish, Liberal, etc." and frequently don't develop "Black Characters" in their films (I am a proud, 52 Year Old American of African descent) has nothing to do with it because in the words of two great thinkers who just happened to both be bi-sexual (another lifestyle that I personally, don't approve of):

"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function." - F. Scott Fitzgerald

And

“Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves.”
― George Gordon Byron

I saw Nate Parker's "Birth of a Nation" last night with my Wife. Initially, we intended to wait until it was released on home video because we have never been particularly impressed with the acting or films of the lead and/or other casts members(especially Gabriel Union)...

Man were we wrong! We both agreed, that it is an incredible film. The acting, character development, cinematography, where all first rate.

The man has crafted a small Masterpiece. His performance, was more than worth of a Best Actor win and was by far the best performance in by far the best film I have seen released in 2016...

Most are like that.

All great and precious things are lonely.

this movie has received standing ovations at every film festival that it was shown and even won awards. Metacritic scores it at 77% Rotten tomatoes 96% and then the rumors about the Filmmakers past comes up (conveniently out of nowhere) and the first and only rating on IMDB was some woman who claimed to have seen the movie at a screening and gave the movie 4/10 stars. This is the exact same rating that's been on this page going on over three weeks now, and that is how I know the rating for this film on this site is *beep* This site is catering to some woman with an ax to grind against the filmmaker who was exonerated. Everyone is raving about how good this film is film critics have been rambling on about how it should be nominated for an Oscar, and yet, IMDB is allowing 1 reviewers score for this movie to override all the other scores. That four-star score is based on one woman's review dating back three weeks ago, and how that one review was allowed to be-be the only review and the only review that was computed seems a bit off.

reply

Laura, thank you for seeing the world the way it is. There is an overwhelming number of ignorant, racist people commenting on the quality of this film having never seen it. It is disgusting.

reply

The filmmakers' past did not come out of nowhere. Their past came out of court records and newspaper stories from the time of the rape and the ensuing trials. Two black guys who raped a white coed decide to make a film about a black guy who slaughters white women and children. Whatever works to undermine their careers works for me.

reply

The rating system at imdb is absolutely broken.

reply

There are alternatives.

Critics: www.rottentomatoes.com

Opening night audiences: www.cinemascore.com

According to both the critics, and opening night audiences, "The Birth of a Nation" is the best movie currently in theatres.

According to IMDB users, it is the worst movie in theatres.

You might think that's strange. It's just IMDB racism showing through. Just like with the "Roots" reboot, "Black-ish", and on and on...

Did the director maybe rape someone a long time ago? I don't know.

Do these whiners, who pretend that they are fighting for a cause, realize that their hero, Trump, raped his first wife? Hopefully they Google that and shut up.

reply

Yep, I have never seen any film in history I believe, that ever won an important Oscar, that averaged a 5.2 in the year it was released. Has never happened. Its even worse than Ghostbusters, and is pretty much done.

reply

First of all it's only played at Sundance, so 1,400+ people haven't even seen it yet. It's playing at TIFF in Toronto next week which will give it an influx of new votes. It's being purposely down voted by people who haven't seen it due to the rape story controversy, obviously. You can see the stats when you click on the number of votes.

ATM 4.9/10 based on 1444 votes.

Votes Percentage Rating
496 34.3% 10
126 8.7% 9
52 3.6% 8
59 4.1% 7
30 2.1% 6
32 2.2% 5
26 1.8% 4
20 1.4% 3
36 2.5% 2
567 39.3% 1

reply

Well thats still a problem then, isn't it. People dislike the maker of the film SO MUCH that they would vote his movie a "1" and boycott his film. This film is not going anywhere, and they should have just donated 17.5 million dollars to rape victims instead.

reply

When it comes to any films about race or race relations, IMDb is the worst gauge of their potential quality, as the site is crawling with undereducated racist rednecks. RottenTomatoes and Metacritic are much safer and more accurate representations, as the data on those sites is collected from people who are exponentially less stupid.

Uh, not really. The post is about the IMDB rating. 12 Years a Slave won the Oscar...and has an 8.1 rating, one of the highest possible on the site, all time. This movie has...a 4.9 lol...there is 0 chance it wins anything at this point as it not even in the same stratosphere as a film like that, and you don't need to look at any other sites to see it. Its already clear.

reply

There are an awful lot of people that give black themed films a 1 well before they are released. That kind of irons out once the film is released. I would bet that 12 years a Slave had a rating near this at one time before it was actually released. I am seeing an early screening next week.

I am not surprised about racism. I do find it weird that people vote when they have not seen a film. I mean, get a life.

reply

I just saw it, and I thought it was a much better film than 12 Years a Slave. That one is kind of middle of the road, but I thought the filmmaking for this was really good for a first-time feature filmmaker. Also, I thought Nate Parker's acting in this was excellent.

There is no way that that many people have seen this film already and that nearly 40 percent of them thought it merited a 1. Even someone who saw the film but hated it wouldn't give it a 1. (This isn't Police Academy 7.) No, the early voters don't like the movie's premise, Parker's past, or both. But the rating will definitely rise when people actually start to see the movie.

reply

What fanatics?

reply

I've seen it twice and gave it a 5/10.

I gave 12 YEARS 10/10 and voted it my favorite movie of the year when it came out.

I'm a white male over 50.

Quality is quality regardless of he subject manner. TBOAN simply isn't as great or as bad as some make it out to be. It's a well-intended movie that does or says nothing original.

reply

white people on imdb always rate black movies low, regardless of surrounding circumstances.

they do it every single time before a film's release.

this is nothing new.

"Please disabuse yourself of the notion that my purpose on earth is to tuck ignorance in at night."

reply

Five weeks later, and the number of reviews is only 31. So, what happened to your ridiculous claim of 1700? lol:D
Saw it today andI will be seeing it again before next weekend.

reply

Good for you. So did the few other people who would still see it, and it bombed at the box office in 6th and even unbiased reviews are coming in now, and even they are saying it is bad. Over-rated over-hyped movie, made by a rapist lol...total fail. No studio will ever get Nate Parkered again.

reply

Still not doing very well even after its opening. Since that time it's gone up from 5 to only 5.5. The folks that have seen it are rating it about 6 or 6.5. That's in the average/mediocre range.

reply

Rating right before the movie opened-
