how much of this movie is silly mystic mumbo jumbo?

i read the review that gave the total spoiler that it's about some kid who was somehow possessed with spirits and is hailed by native americans to be some sort of magical thing and then he's all spiritual, etc and finally becomes a major hero.

is that really what happens? how much of that is true? if that's what really happens, it sounds so stupid i'm not surprised it got no praise or hope for an oscar.

Yeah the movie have Nat this whole revenge storyline. In reality dude was nuts, but he was fighting something completely and utterly evil (slavery). It could have been a really facisnating story where neither side is good or evil. Around 65 whites were killed by Nat Turner and his group, and in turn over 200 blacks were murdered.
