How Many Slaves Landed in the U.S.?

Perhaps you, like me, were raised essentially to think of the slave experience primarily in terms of our black ancestors here in the United States. In other words, slavery was primarily about us, right, from Crispus Attucks and Phillis Wheatley, Benjamin Banneker and Richard Allen, all the way to Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass. Think of this as an instance of what we might think of as African-American exceptionalism. (In other words, if it’s in “the black Experience,” it’s got to be about black Americans.) Well, think again.

The most comprehensive analysis of shipping records over the course of the slave trade is the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, edited by professors David Eltis and David Richardson. (While the editors are careful to say that all of their figures are estimates, I believe that they are the best estimates that we have, the proverbial “gold standard” in the field of the study of the slave trade.) Between 1525 and 1866, in the entire history of the slave trade to the New World, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World. 10.7 million survived the dreaded Middle Passage, disembarking in North America, the Caribbean and South America.

And how many of these 10.7 million Africans were shipped directly to North America? Only about 388,000. That’s right: a tiny percentage.

Only a committed white supremacist at best, and a full-blown sociopath at worst, would somehow even have a need to put an inarguable 250-year-long campaign of unrelenting kidnapping, rape, torture and murder (founded on a psychologically twisted, and utterly Godless lie to start with) "into perspective".

It's loosely like saying, "yeah, but he only raped one woman THIS TIME", after a jury has delivered a tear-filled, guilty verdict in the rape trial of a hideously violent, repeat-offender, serial rapist, after only 30 minutes of deliberation. So what!!!

This thread VERY strongly indicates that BOTH OF YOU are in need of serious psychological counseling! Because these people weren't numbers. They were 380,000 living, breathing, thinking, feeling, human beings. And the psychologically healthy "PERSPECTIVE" is to want to know who all these living, breathing, thinking, feeling, human beings were, that were tortured and killed so mercilessly...because of a single from-the-bowels-of-Hell original lie!!!

It's amazingly gross and lacking in conscience. Just stop it already.

I think anyone reasonable can differentiate between a genuine threat and hyperbole.

This... People act like all whites owned slaves when in fact only about 1 percent of the country owned slaves. And about 1 percent of those slave owners were black. The first slave owner in American was Anthony Johnson, a former indentured servant, who happened to be black. And the people who sold the Africans to the Americas were mostly blacks or Arabs. So why is it that only white people get the blame? People also fail to mention how it was white countries that first outlawed slavery. Many African countries didn't get around to abolishing slavery until the mid 1900s. Mauritania didn't abolish slavery until 1981. So all of you white bashers out there, tell me again how it's all whitey's fault...

Millions of Africans sold into slavery by other Africans. The is enough blame to go around but what we lack compassion for human suffering. However, is there an expiration date on guilt? And what about Amerindians a culture and race essential wiped from existence? All I can say is the white man suffering slow grueling extinction from all the recrimination brought by countless peoples who have benefited for the rule of law brought to lawless lands. Sort of. The human existent is a straight up Greek tragedy without any redeeming light posts on the way to oblivion. Everyone fight for pole position to see who is the biggest victim or loser.

What about the white people who were hung for stealing a loaf centuries ago? Oh that doesn't matter right because it's ancient history and we can't blame a single race.

Things were horrible in old times. Everyone had bad lives. Blacks had it much worse being sold into slavery. But when you focus on one crime of the past and brush other crimes off as "just how it was", it's really a strong form of hypocrisy.
