I am reading Philip Roth's book now. This is the story of a young man breaking away from his father, but I don't even see an actor portraying Mr. Messner in the credits! How can such a crucial part of the story be ignored?

Hi Love in the Library. I noticed that too and did a little digging. I shared it on my post http://www.chapter1-take1.com/2016/07/indignation-by-book-meet-logan-lerman.html but bascially his father is played by a Broadway (primarily) actor named Danny Burstein. I've got a couple of pictures of him on the site paired with passages from the book. I'm about halfway through the book.

The parents are played by actors. They have some dialogue and character development, though they're probably not the most important characters in the story--those would be Marcus, Olivia and the Dean.
