Burials in Austrailia

So, we never got to see just how deep they were when they dug out of the cemetery, but when they buried Maria and Vic, the grave was only 12 inches at most. Any scavenger would have taken the bodies away.

Plus, the cemetery that they were in seemed to not be normal dirt. Perhaps it was because it was just low budget and they wanted to allow the actors to come out of the dirt. It almost looked like pebbles.

You have to think about their climate and terrain compared our own. New Orleans cemeteries are above ground due to the city being basically one giant swamp. Cemeteries in deserts don't consist of dirt and green grass.

This is a photo of Castlemaine in Australia where the show was filmed. The cemetery looks to be somewhat green with dry rocky grounds? Mayb

This article says that the top of the casket must be no less than 900 millimeters from the surface, or just under 3 feet. Common caskets are about 2 feet deep, so about 5 feet all together. You're not far off. But even the picture depicts a rocky soil. Maybe they use pebbles to infill because its appropriate for the climate and terrain?

I was wondering that. New Orleans was the example in my head as well.

But also like you said, pebbles are probably easier to escape from than compacted dirt haha. I binge watched this show and I'm really on the fence about a lot of things. Good idea, but execution is so-so.

Perhaps the graves were shallow due to terrain. They all seemed to have a stone slab over top of them (aside from the unmarked grave), maybe to stop scavenging animals. Either way the dirt would backfill the hole they crawled out of anyway once the body is out of there, so there's no real way to eyeball how deep they're dug without seeing the actual casket.
