Dog kill

Stopped watching the show at 5 minutes in episode 1.

Should I continue watching? Hate the portrait of killing animals in the any way even if it's theatrical.

Is the dog spared?

reply

Dog is not spared but nothing beyond a gunshot heard and he did seem sympathetic. Since he seemed to know the animal and tell it that it was loved, I wonder it it had developed rabies or something as it seemed rather aggressive. I flinch from these things yet was not bothered from the rest of the film. There was one more scene involving animals that had a character bring back some rabbits that he had killed, but no killijg was shown. Just the results of the hunt. If you don't eat meat, it might disturb you.

It had very little to do with the plot. The previous commenter's explanation makes sense, but I also wondered if the dog was going wild due to the dead rising. But they didn't expand upon it, so it may just have been in keeping with the death theme. People die in this show as well, and there's blood and a pretty gory injury late in the season, if that bothers you.

It had to do with building character. As I said to the OP, it's showing the audience that James will do what needs to be done whether he wants to or not. Which pays off at the end of the season when he shoots Vic even though he clearly doesn't want to.

Make sure you don't see The Lobster.

The dog had to be put down because it was rabid. It's not like they were killing it just because they wanted to. It's showing that James is the kind of guy who will do what needs to be done whether he wants to or not.

Slight problem with your theory: there is no rabies in Australia.

reply

I guess you've never heard of ABVL or other lyssaviruses? "Rabies" isn't in Australia, but very closely related viruses are. Not to mention, the fact that there are no current cases does not mean infection is impossible.

You're probably correct that killing of the dog with rabies had to do with development of the main character. However, near the end of this first year series, it is mentioned that Noregard, the company that the Dr. is associated with, is involved in the development of antivirals -- and rabies is caused by a virus.

Yep, it felt like some kind of foreshadowing but missed that bit, so I wondered what it might have meant.
