Why does he have a family?
Shouldn't he be retired from the real world and live with a dog?
A loner in the woods seems way more like a suspect, than a family man.

After the first book he has the family, they just switched the timeline around for some reason.
shareThere are so many changes from the books that it would be hard to list them all. Yes, he should be living in the (Arkansas) woods with a dog, not on the coast in Washington. And he wouldn't have had to tell Julie about Donny Fenn, because she was his widow.
I don't have a real problem with them updating the setting to the modern day, and making Swagger a veteran of Afghanistan, rather than Vietnam. But it seems like the rest was just created from scratch, with a few borrowed character names.
I groaned when I saw the sterotypical beautiful wife and cute daughter.
shareHe is a skilled smart good looking guy...why wouldn't he have a good looking wife and kid...thats how it works....I know because when I met my wife over 40 years ago....I said.....I gotta be nice to her....she is way better looking than I will ever get...so do not blow it.
shareHe got a nice family.
shareThis show does not give a crap about the books apparently.
shareThey decided to pretty things up and go with the cookie cutter perfect family though I didn't notice a dog yet. The movie had it much better with him as the loner troubled by his past.
I find it weird he's talked about his past missions in such great detail with his wife (and to some degree his kid) that she even knows the name of the bad guy sniper he was up against. That doesn't seem like standard practice.
Different demographics. The books were written for a mostly male-centric audience, while the show is "shooting" for a broader audience. Not that I mind - the kid is cute and Shantel is her usual Shantel girl-next-door hotness (the latter is never a negative, IMO 😀).
No blah, blah, blah!
I would have preferred having Shantel play the nurse like the movie, she was a big part of it. I'm sure having her slowly getting involved with Bob Lee would still attract female viewers just like males.

I get it , they needed all the cast in the Pilot to get it into production, too bad I like when the story doesn't show all it's cards at ones.
