Yeah, the part of the movie where he napalms those men and watches them burn to death is an example of over the top violence.
As dark as both the movie and the series are, the series grounds itself in Swagger's family and his loyalty to the the ideals he fought for as a marine.
I also agree that I like Memphis being a smart, determined, conflicted woman. Very nuanced. And can't say too much about Mrs. Swagger.
The only part of the movie that I liked better was that old man in Tennessee. Old man: "Never caught those men on the grassy knoll, they were buried within three hours." Memphis: "You know that to be true?" Old man: "Still have the shovel." 😄
{edit} Oh shy it, that "old man" was Levon Helm. Was there nothing that man couldn't do well?
