"Netflix" wil co-produce Season 2 (BBC America NO longer involved)

With shooting just begun on the second season of historical drama The Last Kingdom, Netflix has joined the series as co-producer and will air it next year in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Japan, Spain and Portugal. BBC America, which broadcast the first season Stateside in 2015, is no longer involved. Netflix will add S1 to the U.S. library this year. From Downton Abbey producer Carnival Films, the fantasy epic goes out in the UK on BBC Two.

Based on bestselling book series, The Saxon Stories, by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom is adapted by Stephen Butchard. The first eight-part season averaged 2.7M viewers on BBC Two and picked up a Best Drama Series nomination from the Royal Television Society.

The stories focus on Uhtred (American Horror Story‘s Alexander Dreymon), a warrior and outsider on a fierce mission to reclaim his birthright; while re-telling the history of King Alfred the Great and his desire to unite the many separate kingdoms into what would become England.

Season 2 picks up in the year 878 as the wild lands of the north have fallen into chaos and rebellion. Uhtred continues the fight for his native land of Northumbria. Having given his sword to King Alfred, despite his upbringing by the invading pagan Danes, he embarks on a voyage to reclaim his own fate and avenge Earl Ragnar’s death, recapturing his ancestral lands of Bebbanburg.

Returning cast also includes David Dawson (Peaky Blinders), Emily Cox (Homeland), Ian Hart (Boardwalk Empire) and Tobias Santelmann (Marcella). New cast includes Thure Lindhardt (The Bridge), Millie Brady (Legend) and Peter McDonald (Thirteen).

Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant are exec producers for Carnival Films with Butchard. Elizabeth Kilgarriff is exec producer for the BBC.

Wonder why BBC America pulled out?

reply

They prefer to only air old episodes of Star Trek, the next Generation.

I was looking forward to this, but don't want to mess with getting Netflix.

I already have Netflix, but don't want to watch it on a laptop or phone screen and don't want to mess with adding more hardware and cabling to the rat's nest of cables already connecting other devices to my TV. So if I can't save it on my DVR and watch it on the TV like last season then I may just forget about it. I use Netflix exclusively for watching old shows I remember fondly or never got around to watching when they were on the air. For new shows I either watch them on TV or not at all.

I have Directv and Amazon prime to watch shows. I really don't want to add any more stuff or pay any more money. Especially to watch just one series. It's a real bummer.

Netflix actually is stepping up the game and producing a lot of original shows. You all should really check out some of the shows coming out like the Marvel Comics shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones), Stranger Things just came out and it is great.

Netflix producing the next season is probably the best thing that can happen for The Last Kingdom. I am very excited to see what Netflix does with this show because all of their original shows are interesting and well done, imo.

reply

Agreed. They've got some great shows on there.

reply

Yep, they have been producing some good stuff. I don't have cable tv, only Netflix, which I watch mainly on tv through an app in my PS4 console.

Adding Apple TV or A Firestick is really worth it.

Get a streaming device like an Amazon fire stick and install Kodi on it for free. Then you have 100% free access to every single show & movie that's ever been made. Simple and easy, best streaming algorithm out there! Get you a Fire Stick & HD Antenna(for free local channels) and you can get rid of your cable provider for good. I have it installed on every device in my home.

Netflix isn't expensive and they tend to load all the episodes at once so you could sign up for a month and cancel or binge watch while still under the free trial.
