I cannot believe that they left women unprotected just like that, not a single soldiers protecting them, near the battle field. WTF! Shouldn't they be hiding in the castle or something!

The answer is pretty simple.
The Saxons were outnumbered by the Danes and needed every man who could hold a weapon in the shield wall.
As for castles, the story is set in the 9th Century before Castles existed. It wasn't until after the Norman conquest 200 years later that Castles started to be built in England.
But I am sure the king's wife and his son were somewhere safe, and that's where all those women should have been.

Most army's up to more modern times, had camp followers, people to cook for them, family's, whores etc.
shareTrue, and the family probably would have been there. But to setup in the same field in plain sight? Thats just idiotic. They would have been smart enough to be further back hiding in the woods.
