Well . . . maybe you are over-reading the scene. Do you have a dog? I have a dog of the really, really big brown eyes variety, and I find myself gazing into her eyes for minutes at a time on a regular basis. (Do you know that the primary social distinction between dogs and wolves is that wolves will NOT look people in the eyes, but dogs will?) I agree with poster who said that Gordo took Jangles in order to make friends with him (so that Jangles will not bark when Gordo shows up). Also I think Gordo was in love with Robyn and wanted to imprint himself on her dog. It was her dog, I believe--her father named him so my guess is that her father died, and Robyn took the dog home. (Which in fact is how my family adopted our big-eyed dog.) That long stare was just Robyn's thing.
by the way the line "My father named him" was a great line, a significant plot clue
