Why do young people want to see the heroes die?

Seriously. Why?

Because "stakes"? what does that even mean? You need to see someone die to get the point across [the point being that the hero is doing a risky move]?

Because it's "kewl"?

I want don't want them to die, I want to see more movies with them in.

The story of Infinity Gauntlet is Thanos using the Infinity Stones to kill all the heroes who oppose him so that Lady Death will fall in love with him. But then after killing everyone off, Lady Death rejects him and he brings all the heroes back to life. Though the real thing is that Marvel can't keep these actors forever and will need to let them go and may not want to have to recast these popular characters.

I think character deaths can often lead to thematic depth. But all these people saying that multiple characters will die in this movie and THEN stay dead... Yeah, no. No. That's a terrible idea. I'm fine with one or two BIG character deaths if they're satisfying but I'm not down with watching half the cast killed off.

reply

I don't WANT to see these guys killed off, I like watching them!

But I'm predicting it anyway, because I've heard how much they're paying Downey.

Downey is the defacto Iron Man. I sure hope they don't make a teen black chick the new Iron man. At least give the part to an already existing character that is related to him directly through the movies.

Peeps say Cap America will go down. Quite probably. And if he does go down, give the shield to Bucky. At least it makes some sense.

reply

If they want a "new Iron Man", they'll probably use Gwynneth Paltrow or Don Cheadle.

It'd maintain the continuity of the franchise if they took over the red-and-gold suit, they're both good actors who can carry a film, and they'll both work a hell of a lot cheaper than Downey.

reply

I agree in all fronts.

reply

It's gonna be sad to see a bunch of them go down in the same movie. After all these years. I hope it's just a couple of them.

reply

conspiracy theorists are claiming that Wanda will bring Quicksilver back from the dead.

Killing Quicksilver was terrible. Bringing him back sounds terrible as well.

reply

Yeah, I don't like the idea either.

reply

Yes, "stakes". Especially true for superheroes who are mostly invulnerable, because there is never any real sense of a threat to them.

The bigger problem I have is the inevitable resurrection, which cheapens the whole thing. The Superman funeral would have been moving, but for the minor detail that
he ain't dead and everyone knows it!
.

Stakes, even for non-immortal-like superheroes don't add to anything. You don't need a character to die to understand the gravity of a situation. That's what good screen writing is supposed to do for the viewer.

For me, I want some of the heroes to die, because it will make this movie more significant rather than just another run of the mill Marvel film with good guys vs bad guys and the good guys prevail and everyone is alive and well.

Also, the films have been building Thanos up as the big bad, he is something we should fear, or at least that is something the teasers have been conveying to us during the end credits sequences, to have the Avengers fight him, defeat him and they all survive would diminish him as a threat and instead he becomes another disposable Marvel villain, who was easily defeated in the end.

"Stakes?" Yeah, I think it is about time with us now on our tenth+ Marvel film that the stakes have to be raised in some sense to keep the audience invested and on their toes, having no significant character loss in what is being called "Infinity WAR" jeopardises the main element of war and that is death and loss on both sides.

reply

Super heroes or not, people are supposed to die. It would add some kind of realism if one of them died.
