Stopping the Overlords with ... a starting pistol!
One part which I did find amusing was on one of the deleted scenes. A teenage girl is watching the Overlords arrive on the TV with her parents. Her father disappears and returns with a box with a starting pistol in it. She says something like, "They have spaceships a mile long and you are going to stop them with a starting pistol."
