Overlord's alphabet is based on OUR constellations?

Seems a bit odd, unless there is some sort of more particular connection with our past, of course.

Yeah ... seems totally wack. Like the language of the AZTECs being based on the addresses of Italian city piazzas...

Not really, in the book their solar system was only 40 light years away from earth, on a galactic scale that's basically a stone's throw, the night sky from their planet would look very similar to earths, it wouldn't be an exact match but close enough for that char to be able to match up stuff closely.

Course, it's Hollywood and they are going to take creative license, in reality there's nothing about their language in the books, the communications board thingy in the books is a real ouiji board and actually gives the stars co-ordinates in relation earth, not a constellation or name etc.

But they have to speed things up a bit for the mini series and also they are changing up a bunch of things just to make it a little different from the books and put a bit of their own spin on things.

Thank you! There IS intelligent life outside my little cocoon.

Except that the constellation that Milo sketches out with the lipstick is the Overlord's system, which would bear no resemblance whatsoever to the observed pattern from the Solar system's point of view. So, it pretty well makes that a complete error on the part of the screenplay writer. Duh.

So, that point about it being "close enough" is wrong, wrong, wrong. BZZT. No pizza for you.

Except why would their own planet be in one of those "alphabet letters"?

We don't describe any constellations that contain Sol, because that makes no sense.

Long ago come to the conclusion either stop read/watch scifi or accept "languages irregularities" as a kind of white lie to help the stories along.

It not me being generous the the writers its to save myself, still even so still sometimes i find myself muttering to myself but i do my best not to dwell on it.

Its kinda a shame there are some wonderful sci fi books were the main focus is the effect languages have on behaviors and societies and its can be a very profound and thought provoking field.

Of course it's based on OUR constellations, because MILO is one of us.

The alphabet was a code, custom designed CLUES left intentionaly by the Overlords for Milo to DISCOVER.
He was chosen to be Witness to the End..

And Karellan KNEW curiosity was so valued by Milo (Milo told him to his face at Rupert's party), they made it a kind of riddle, to sate his curiosity.

Not odd at all. :)

Besides, if their tech allows them to do things like communicate through deceased relatives -- if they can communicate like THAT, why would THEY need alphabets?

I really thought James Spader would march out with his magic marker and draw constellations all over the screen of the camera filming the show
