"This movie rolled half a dozen or more other movies/shows into one big, long, anticlimactic movie. It took bits and pieces of good movies/shows and tried to make one long epic or saga. Parts of this movie were okay, but it dwelled on some subjects that didn't seem to be needed in the general plot of the movie. I did enjoy figuring out which movie/show different sections were copying. There was a lot of pre-movie hype for not a lot of living up to expectations. Not on my list to watch again."
Examples?
I've never seen the miniseries, but I've read the book. I have also heard that the miniseries did not adhere to the book very well either. Of course, as an American company produced a miniseries for an American audience based on a novel by a British author, this is not surprising.
CHILDHOOD'S END came out in 1953 and it appears to have inspired other books and films over the years. Certainly, other authors, filmmakers and musicians appear to have borrowed ideas from it. These include the book and film versions of THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS and the film INDEPENDENCE DAY. As well as the music band PINK FLOYD with their song CHILDHOOD'S END and the music band GENESIS with their song WATCHER OF THE SKIES.
There are other examples, but I'm sure you get the idea.
