Tried Real Hard, But Came Up Short

Joe Dirt's a fun character and his inability to catch a break are funny at times. The first movie was original and quirky and it caught fire. The sequel has some funny moments, but it just seemed like everyone was going through the motions. This movie steals plot points from several other movies, but they are obviously homages as opposed to outright thievery.

The movie starts out with Joe sitting on a bus stop bench telling his story (Forrest Gump). Joe Dirt is now married and lives in a trailer with his gorgeous wife Brandy and their three triplet daughters. A tornado tears Joe away (shades of Wizard of Oz) and transports him 50 years into the past where he meets his wife's mother (also played by Brittany Daniel). He then travels through time (I have no idea how this could happen, but oh well) and winds up back to the day from the first movie where he meets Brandy on her porch as her dog's testicles have frozen to the wood. Kid Rock decided not to be part of this movie and so Mark McGrath takes over a very similar role as Jimmy and beats Joe to the porch to save the dog. Jeez. Just writing all that made my head hurt. None of it made any sense.

This of course changes history as Brandy marries Jimmy and Joe has to figure out where it all went wrong (Back to the Future Part II). He begins to learn how things would have turned out if he had not met Brandy. (Its a Wonderful Life).

The movie has some nice moments. The time travel plot could have worked if it made more sense. David Spade's Dirt is a likeable guy and its hard not to see how much he loves the character. Brittany Daniel is back as his love, Brandy, and while she's lacking in acting chops, she does look good doing it. Christopher Walken, Dennis Miller, and Adam Beach have return cameos, but don't contribute a lot to the proceedings. Newcomer to the series, Patrick Warburton, has a recurring role popping up in Dirt's life as he travels through time.

With a bit of a tighter script and lot more sense, this could have been a really funny film.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
