It seemed to me that the story might have been inspired by the "Lead Masks Case" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_Masks_Case). Anyone else think the same?

I enjoyed this movie... it deserves to be remade with an actual budget.

That is a very interesting anecdote, but I don't think it was the basis. I do agree with you that it should have its own film, the events surrounding that story are super bizarre.
