is this actually a horror movie
Im just curious. From the images, trailers, reviews I've seen it doesn't really seem like one but IMDb says it is. Im expecting several startling "jump" moments but not straight horror.

shareWhy not? There's a lot of different kinds of horror movies. You can go from something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre to something like Suspiria.
shareYep, there are quite a few "jump" moments, and I think you could say this is somewhat a "survival horror" movie. The same was said regarding the movies The Raid 1 and 2, where it's a bunch of dudes trying to survive waves of enemies.
It's not that different in this story, the main characters want to make it out alive no matter what, but the odds are against them.
Fine, fine, I'll leave! But first I'm going to bother these peanuts! Hmm? Yes? Hmm? HMM?
I wouldn't really consider Raid 2 a horror IMO
shareWhich is why I said "survival horror".
You've got one character trying to avoid death between every breath he takes, against an onslaught of armed guys not to be taken lightly. It's about survival, and it's terrifying.

Straw Dogs?
shareIt's "horror" in terms being gory and violent. Conventional horror, no. It's more of a suspense thriller in my opinion, but it definitely has horror elements. If you like horror films, more than likely you'll enjoy it.
shareJust out of curiosity, when does a film cease being a horror and become a thriller (and vice versa) in your eyes? People argue about it all the time lol, it seems to be a very fine line. Take Se7en for example, there are people who'd swear on their life that it's a horror movie, and people who'd fight to the death saying it's not.

I think it depends on the level of intensity and atmosphere. Se7en has scene which can be considered horrific, but the atmosphere for the duration of it isn't very creepy etc.
This is more suspenseful and characters are in bigger danger.
I really can't explain it well, I hope that helps.

Survival horror like Funny Games, High Tension, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Strangers, You're Next, The Loved Ones, etc.
shareIt's more thriller than horror to me... and so are some Dario Argento's films for that matter. There's horror with supernatural elements and then there's stuff like this, that's sorta realistic but just f'd up. In thrillers they don't make a point to show you someone's gnarly wounds, and you see a fair bit of that in this. I'll disagree with someone that posted that there were jump scares, there are not. There's just a lot of subverted expectations and slow moments followed by quick and brutal action.
