I hated this show right off the bat, why did I watch the entire thing ?

has this happened to anyone ? I started watching the first episode, Gus without a doubt was the most annoying lead character I've come across in a TV show in a long time. On top of being unlikable he's constantly in situations where he's got very attractive women basically throwing themselves at him...ok that seems realesitc ..oh he's one of the writers? makes more sense now . moving on then you have Micky the Chaotic wild child girl I wonder if these two unlikely people will get together ? ...oh boy haven't we seen this movie before ? then the episode ended, the next one starts and I'm still on the couch then somehow before I know it I've just binged every episode of the show

why did I just do this ?

reply

i felt the same way, i kept thinking maybe it'll wow me in the end push through. it was so stupid. and like natalie said in the very beginning gus is fake nice, he was a douche to mickey, she should have just stuck to her self bettering plan. pass

reply

also his Douchiness (is that a word ?) kinda came out of nowhere I mean I get him being "fake nice" but I feel like the show wants us to sympathize with Gus at times. I dunno like I said I really didn't like it.

reply

no i totally get what you mean. he really surprised me when he was having that conv with mickey at the studio "you seemed like the cool girl but turned into the regular needy girl" (poor paraphrasing) it just seemed cold and semi out of character

reply

Who's he to say she's just. Nerdy girl or what ever?. He's just a nerdy little dude

B/c you have too much free time?

he's constantly in situations where he's got very attractive women basically throwing themselves at him.

I think this is the real reason why most people dislike Gus. We can handle fat guys having hot chicks, but not nerds dammit! Nerds need to keep their damn nerd hands off our hot women. Who's with me? 

reply

I'm not with you on this, for sure. First of, I like the series but hated Gus's character. He is annoying, unlikable and kind of a douche and that's got nothing to do with him being a nerd. I seriously can't understand how did he manage to get those cute girls to go out with him...I mean, come on..the guy had absolutely no personality. He doesn't even try to grow up. On the other hand, I like the quirkiness that goes along with the story through out the season. Mickey is quite cool though...a bit damaged but cool and very like able.

Another person mentioning this. I really do feel that this is the reason why most people dislike Gus. Consciously or subconsciously, people don't want nerds to be with pretty girls.

Mickey is an absolute train wreck, but she's pretty so it's okay. Just look how you describe her.

See? You downplayed her craziness. Would this have anything to do with her physical appearance? I'm wondering if she looked like Gus if people would still describe her as "a bit damaged but cool". My guess is they wouldn't.

reply

I'm going to have to disagree with you on

This is a super common trope in media.

In fact I'd argue most males probably identify themselves more of an underdog type not unlike a nerd (which is probably one of the reasons why Romantic Comedies with like George Clooney/Ryan Gosling types aren't so popular with males). So when the underdog gets the pretty girl it makes them feel good or whatever. The problem I think people have is that the Gus character pretty much has women throwing themselves at him which seems highly unrealistic. When dudes attract women that quickly they usually have something about them that makes them desirable ( wealth, ambition, power, intelligence, funny, good looks, etc.) but Gus is a glorified tutor who, to be blunt, in my opinion is well below average looking (big nose, short, etc.). The two sisters who wanted to have a threesome with him was totally ridiculous. They came to the area with some WAY better looking guys and they choose Gus whom they've just met? Totally absurd.

reply

Agree to disagree. Besides, no one would admit to being that shallow.

Just take a look at how Mickey is treated here on the forum VS. Gus. Mickey is way worse than Gus. A total mess. Using and manipulating people for her own personal gain. How many times did she use Bertie?

But since she's pretty 90% of what she does in the show gets swept under the rug. Which was my point (and still is). But Gus is a nerd and he shouldn't be with someone that hot!

Meh.

reply

It's not just his looks, though, it's that he has NO personality and his "quirkiness" is actually kind of annoying. Plus he's fake nice. Girls will get w. a guy if he's not a 10 if he has something else going for him!

reply

It's not just his looks, though,

His physical appearance is usually the first thing people mention while Mickey pretty much gets a free pass. Wonder why? Oh yeah, she's gorgeous.

I do get a kick out of you people trying to justify your shallowness though. 

reply

Why do you keep trying to be Gus's hero? You must be a nerd yourself and take offense at people questioning the probability of a nerd getting with a string of very attractive females, basically throwing themselves at him. I'm guessing this is sort of like a personal fantasy of yours, otherwise, why are you defending a character with practically no redeeming qualities? Sorry, bud, but people dislike his character because his personality is non-existent, he treats women like crap and expects them to be interested in dating him simply because he pretends to be a nice guy, and he has no ambition, goals, or career to speak of. It's also utterly unbelievable that a bunch of attractive females would immediately be interested in him when he's not an attractive looking man and they don't know him well at all. I can buy an attractive girl falling for an unattractive guy if he has other redeeming qualities, but Gus has none. So you can quit trying to place the blame for the dislike of Gus on all of us when it's clearly the character himself.

And take a look at this board: there are plenty of people who dislike Mickey just as much as they do Gus. It has nothing to do with their outward appearance.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

Oh look, another person mentioning Gus' appearance yet saying his appearance has nothing to with disliking him. You dorks keep proving my point with every post, lol.

Because Gus has women throwing themselves at him when they don't even know him. So yes, it is unbelievable that attractive girls would be lusting after a guy most would agree is not attractive based solely on his looks. That's how physical attraction works: it's based on the physical. Since these girls barely know Gus and are therefore unable to be attracted to him based on his personality which they've yet to come to know, the attraction would consequently have to be based solely on a physical attraction. When you see a girl you've never met but whom you find attractive, are you basing that attraction on the way she looks or on the personality that you don't know?

That point was pretty obvious. Gus has a multitude of attractive women he barely knows lusting after him. It's not realistic. Stop trying to find logic in something illogical.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

Throughout most of the series... sure. But the characters magically become completely different people by the end of it.

And I think most people that watched the series are more inclined to comment on the characters that are given to us in the last few episodes... which are seemingly virtual mirror-images of the characters that are given to us at the start.

@doggie_rodriguez
You made the best point of all posts I read so far. Also, you're the only one who knows how to write proper sentences without loads of spelling and grammar mistakes which makes me think the other people are 13.

reply

Thanks. Sometimes in these forums it feels like I am talking to brick walls (with learning disabilities).

The people that hate Gus remind me of the people that hate Amy Schumer. They would always mention her weight but insist her weight wasn't why they disliked her. If Gus' nerdiness & Amy's weight aren't issues then why is it mentioned in just about every negative post about them?

reply

You got that right.

reply

honestly I thought the show was about how much of a beotch mickey is and how long it takes for gus to see how horrible she is. i'm in the middle of the series or so and I keep waiting for mickey to stop being so horrible but she seems to get worse. I may stop watching.

reply

I think the "appeal" of Gus is that he is safe. He is a "nice guy" from the mid-west who doesn't seem to give an F (playing bass at the party, joining into partying with the college kids) but he really, really cares what people think deep down.

Is this Judd? It doesn't really matter, but I'm going to imagine that you are.

Who's with me?

Classic Judd.

The ol' "If you disagree with me you must be the filmmaker" routine.

Classic. 

lol, not at all. Judd Apatow is famous for exclaiming, "Who's with me?" after pitching a crazy idea in the writers' room.

I kind of know what you mean. I am six episodes in. I'm pretty ambivalent about it; I'm not watching all 10 in one sitting, but I just started earlier in the week, and now I'm more than halfway through. I kind of find it just interesting enough to keep going, but as far as whether Gus and Mickey ever get together, I couldn't care less because I just don't see them together. I like the Bertie character.

Vulture has a story about The Attractiveness Gap and proves that it's a thing. I don't like to be mean about someone's looks, something they have no control over...but Paul Rust does this weird thing with his lips, the way he sets his mouth sometimes, that does not help his situation at all.

Anyway, so, yes: I find it a little off-putting that gorgeous girls, one after another, keep coming on to him. The girl at Mickey's friends' party, the actress on the set of Wichita...I understand that personality is an enormous part of attraction, but at the point this is happening to him, they don't know him. Plus, his personality isn't really all that great, is it? I don't know, maybe it is...he just seems needy and annoying to me. And Mickey's a train wreck, so why am I watching this? Oh, Bertie. I wish there were a show starring Bertie. I watched the Drunk History "Spies" episode where she tells the story of Virginia Hall just to see her on something else. She's adorable.

reply

considering Paul (Gus) wrote the show with his wife and they are friends with Gillian Jacobs i would say that explains why she was cast. unless you think they should have told her she cant star in their show because she is too pretty. and for the rest of the women who hit on Gus it wouldn't make as much sense if they were not as good looking as mickey

reply

You watched the entire thing because it was on Netflix. You were thinking it would be as satisfying and as addictive as "Jessica Jones" and "Orange is the New Black". You were waiting for a payoff that didn't come.

reply

I'd say that's accurate

reply

You literally described exactly what happened to me. I watched the entire thing (laughed maybe twice), I like Mickey, I hate Gus, and I'm probably gonna keep on watching it. I don't know why? WHAT'S HAPPENED!?
