Why is everyone on Mickey's side?

I know he did a couple of lame things; not giving her his coat when she was cold or taking her to a magic show (at least it was something different). He gave her the option of going and she said yes. Then when they got there, he still gave her option of leaving. She said she wanted to stay. She was so horrible to him. She didn't even give the whole magic thing a chance. Then acted like he had expected her to have a forced opinion on it. Um, no he didn't. He wanted to try something different for her and she didn't even have a good attitude from the start, before he even mentioned going to the magic show. She was so unforgivably rude the whole time.

Then when he invited her over for his friends house, she was like "that sounds stupid." Then showed up and acted like he should've paid attention to her the whole time. That whole scene when they were at his job was ridiculous too. Like why did she have to blow up on him in front of all those people? Just to embarrass him? She could've spoken to him privately. She wasn't thinking about him at all.

I get it. She has issues. But that doesn't give her the right to treat people that way. Just because you have *beep* in your past, doesn't mean people should have to automatically understand and deal with it.

(Yes I know it's just a show, but I'm just expressing my opinions on the characters).

reply

B/c she's pretty.

People go on and on about how awful Gus is and they just gloss over what Mickey did and then give her a free pass b/c "Darnit! She's an addict and she's trying her best!".

not giving her his coat when she was cold

He actually wanted to give her his coat, but he knew they would get kicked out if he did. And then he gave her the coat....and they got kicked out.

In regards to the magic show, I think that was something he was really passionate about and he wanted to share that with her b/c he liked her. It wasn't her thing, but he wasn't a jerk for wanting to share that joy with her.

If Gus were "hot" and doing exactly the same things we would not be having this conversation.

reply

I agree, I thought the same thing. I thought "if Gus was attractive then everyone would be on his side." You're right, he wasn't a jerk for wanting to share what he was interested in when he took her to the magic show. She was a jerk for not respecting his interests and not being open on their date. She didn't even want to go out to begin with and he wanted to just do something nice for her.

reply

This post reeks of misogyny, even if you deny it.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

reply

What?! No it doesn't. You're seeing ghosts.

reply

Personally, I think both of them suck. I can appreciate Mickey's suckage a little more because she's upfront with it. He knew she was a jerk from the start. Gus is kinda phony and I don't like that. Also, that magic show thing? She told him from the start she did not like magic. He didn't seem to care much at all that she wasn't interested. And she still went. If she didn't give the magic show a chance she would have never gone at all. And even when she just wanted to enjoy watching the very excited woman he pulled her away from that and pushed her towards something else when he should have been trying to let her enjoy everything about the experience because he knew it wasn't her cup of tea as a whole.

Her saying his party sounded stupid was blunt and rude and it's clear that she has no filter but his reaction to it was ridiculous. She was awkward, felt out of place, and acted that way. Then he goes and sleeps with someone else that night a day after sleeping with her and wouldn't just be real with Mickey right then and there. If you have a problem you SPEAK UP about it. He just tried to sweep the girl away like she didn't even exist. Her being messy doesn't mean he should just do whatever he wants. Especially since he thinks he's some "nice guy" (which he really isn't).

I don't think everyone is on Mickey's side but I do think there's less focus on her awfulness because it's so out there and in your face. Gus is a douche who thinks he isn't.

reply

I do agree that they both kinda suck. I'm not saying he's perfect but I just didn't understand why Mickey didn't think she treated him like *beep* she kinda did.

Yes, she did tell him that she wasn't into magic. However, Gus liked it. Just because Mickey didn't like it doesn't mean that it should ruin the fun for Gus. She should've been more open to his interests. There's nothing wrong with him wanting to do something he finds fun and sharing it with her. Besides, Gus even said they could've left a couple times and she said no. And I don't blame for Gus not wanting to watch excited woman. I'm not into magic but I'd rather watch a magic show than watch an excited woman all night, that's not a real date. She was even rude to the magician that was trying to show her the card trick. "Oh, are you supposed to remember the card?" ...really? Did she really not know she was supposed to remember the card? That was just pure ignorance.

His reaction to her saying his get-together sounds stupid was completely justified. How was it ridiculous? They argued after their date, had awkward sex, and then when he offered to take her to breakfast she didn't say anything. How was he supposed to react to her saying that? Delighted? She was not awkward and fell out of place, she smiled after saying it. Like she knew she was being a b*tch to him. He had no reason to think she was interested in him at that point.

I do agree that he should've spoken up about how bad she was but she shouldn't have treated him so bad to begin with. I wouldn't really want to talk to her either. Then when she showed up at the party, she was so rude to him and his friends. Like they were being stupid for playing their music.

Like I said, Gus isn't perfect, but Mickey is way worse.

reply

When I said she felt awkward and out of place I meant at the party. I think that came across pretty well. She asked awkward questions in a failed attempt to understand the appeal of the situation and "fit in". Saying the party was stupid was rude. The way she acted at the party while talking to his friends was someone who was awkward and out of place.

And I guess I can't agree about the magic show thing. They were pretty early on in their situation and it's odd for me to see someone push their interests on someone even when they say they don't like it. It's actually selfish and weird. Him not letting her watch the excited woman wasn't a whole lot different than her calling his party stupid. It was just that whole Mickey is upfront with her douchery thing that I was talking about.

Sleeping with another woman a day after sleeping with Mickey and not really telling her he wasn't feeling the situation was not a justified reaction. It's actually kinda nasty. Mickey lacks a filter and immediate self awareness. Gus lacks balls and accountability. I don't agree that Mickey is way worse. She's neurotic and narcissistic but actually made attempts to figure out what she did wrong with Gus and apologize for it. And when she got called out on her nonsense she didn't try to deny it. Gus really never took ownership of anything he did or said.

reply

I didn't say him sleeping with the girl was a justified reaction. I meant his immediate reaction after she said "that sounds stupid" (when he was still in bed with her). I didn't agree with him sleeping with the other chick. I agree that that was a dumb decision.

Yes, Mickey has a douchey attitude up front but how does that excuse her actions? She wasn't mean to him at all when they first met. She started being douchey after they slept together. It still doesn't give her the right to treat him like a douche-bag.

reply

Agreed. People seem to think her being upfront about being douchey is somehow a point in her favor. If anything, she knows she's being douchey and still does it. That may or may not be worse (than hiding it), but she certainly shouldn't be rewarded for it.

That is Mickey in a nutshell. but it's okay b/c she's pretty and keeps it real. 

reply

I just finished this show and came here, so I was surprised to see this first. I liked Mickey, but damn if she didn't bring that on herself.

reply

THANK YOU! I'm not saying I hate her character but she was totally the one at fault. If you look on all the other boards, everyone is defending her and not Gus. It makes no sense.

reply

The funniest part is the examples they have for Gus being awful (most of which are seriously reaching) and then they just gloss over things that Mickey did that were much much worse.

But it's okay b/c she knows she's doing it. She's keeping it real. 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mickey slept with just as many people in the series as Gus did (3). People are always complaining about Gus "sleeping around left and right", but no one ever mentions her sleeping around. And she slept with her boss. Imagine if Gus had done that?

reply

Yeah she sleeps around too. People are just after his Gus because he slept with someone right after they slept together.

reply

I don't blame him at all for that. Mickey and Gus were not an item at that point. She was crappy to him. Heidi was not.

reply

I just finished this show and came here, so I was surprised to see this first. I liked Mickey, but damn if she didn't bring that on herself.

I was also surprised when I first visited this board. Most of what people say about Gus being "fake nice" is a reach. The main one is he slept around, which they weren't a couple AND she was rude to him right after they did sleep together. So there is no way he left her place that morning thinking "This went well. We'll probably be a couple now."

I really do think this is just about looks. Mickey is gorgeous. Gus is not. Attractive people can get away with more. This is nothing new.

reply

I agree. I don't see how he's "fake nice." He's been really genuine and sincere the whole time he's known her. At least, I think he has. That's the reason why she decided to date him to begin with, because he's a nice guy. I didn't like when he slept with Heidi, but you're right, they weren't an actual couple so it's not like he cheated on her.

reply

Been a while since I watched the series, but were they actually "dating"? I think they hung out a few times and then went on a date (after he got mad at her for pawning him off on Bertie). At least, that's how I remember it. I could be wrong though.

reply

No they only just went on one date. But now that I think of it, Mickey did sleep with her boss to "secure" her job. So that doesn't really make her too great, either. I think Mickey sleeping with her boss was way worse than Gus sleeping with Heidi.

reply

Last time I was on these boards it was a pretty 50/50 split on Gus and Mickey.
I also think plenty of people who support one over the other admit neither are perfect and, perhaps more importantly, are not good for each other.

However, Gus is hideously unattractive both inside and out. His various quirks -- such as declining the threesome -- range from irritating to mindbending.

Mickey is farrrrr from ideal, but she's mostly just a messed up person who needs counseling and some other types of support. Not sure a psychiatrist/rehab program can help you stop being a d-bag like Gus.

reply

Oh so because Gus isn't attractive that means that automatically defaults his character? Just because he isn't attractive doesn't mean that they're "even" by kidney treating him like *beep* I'm certain if he was attractive then EVERYONE would be on Gus' s side.

reply

*Mickey not kidney.

Damn autocorrect

reply

I'm certain if he was attractive then EVERYONE would be on Gus' s side.

The thing about that is that no one would EVER admit to that b/c that would mean they are gigantic pieces of crap.

reply

You keep bringing up his looks but listen, his level of attractivness is the least of his unattractive qualities.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

People who hate Gus always feel the need to mention his looks.

Not sure a psychiatrist/rehab program can help you stop being a d-bag like Gus.

Why? B/c a psychiatrist can't help his physical appearance.

Which is what this really is about, his looks. His looks are completely irrelevant to this discussion (yet it's almost always the first thing the "Gus haters" mention).

reply

Theyre both in the wrong because they are people. In the real world there is no right and wrong, black and white. There's layers. There's two sides to a coin.

I'm not on her side. I really like her but it was her baggage and inner angst that pushed Gus away.

No man, not everybody, and not everybody thinks shes even pretty, lmao, cause shes DEFINITELY NOT PRETTY
