Would the show be better if it was set up as younger characters ?

Granted I'm older than the shows characters but one thing that turned me on the show is that these people are in their early thirties and seem to act like they are fresh out of college millennials. I wonder if it would work any better with 20 somethings.

Thoughts?

I keep forgetting they are supposed to be in their 30's because of how they act. It does feel like they are fresh out of college. I guess the point is people don't grow up on schedule anymore, some take longer or never mature at all.Anyway I like the show,I wasn't sure after episode 1 but it's growing on me now that I'm deeper in.

I don't think it would, at least for me. 20 year olds are supposed to act like way, so I wouldn't find it the least bit interesting. I like flawed/realistic characters. I like when "heroes" do bad things b/c they are human.

Plus, not all 30 year olds have it together. It's a different world now. There's pretty much no middle class. People are staying home longer out of necessity. The graduate high school, get a job & get married/have kids and work that job for 35 years days are over.

Mickey reminds me of a girl I used to date (who is actually in her 40s now and probably still bat $h*T crazy b/c people don't just magically get sane when they turn 30 (or 40 in this case).

No. The show works better knowing that the characters of Gus and Mickey have had unsuccessful long term relationships. Something thats harder to depict when writing 20-somethings.. Also, look around. 30-somethings/Gen X are still getting high, being creative, and using social media too

this is actually what 30 year olds are like now. nobody got their *beep* together at 30 these days. i feel that it's very realistic.

reply

20 somethings? No thanks. Every show is about 20 somethings

It was a different world back then. You could be 24 and do that. I caught the tail end of that world so I lucked out. But now, people spend thousands of dollars on education and end up at McDonalds b/c no one worth a damn is hiring.

None of these things appeal to people anymore.

People or you? B/c this is getting pretty solid ratings so it's obviously relating (appealing) to some people.

Young people definitely mature at a slower pace than they did 30 years ago.

They might mature slower, but I feel they are much more intelligent than we give them credit for. My parents were born in the 1950s and they were wrong about A LOT of things. We've heard our whole lives how dumb kids are, but I feel it's the parents of that generation that let us down with their inability to adapt.

One of those friends committed suicide just a few months ago after a long battle with alcoholism.

I'm sorry about your friend, but seeing as that is a very small sample size I don't see how that is relevant.

Too much shows/movies with kids in their young to mid 20's. They're always aspiring to be something, mostly we just view their initial start in the real world .

This show is different as it features that older millennial crowd. The crowd that knows how to use DOS, listened to music from tapes and watched VHS when they were kids, rode bikes outside after school, watched MTV when they played videos, played NES and Genesis, and was present during the birth of the information superhighway. The crowd that was once young, now in their early 30's.. who are not married and still figuring things out. There's alot of us out there.

This show would be very different 10-15 years ago. It wouldn't be better if it was younger characters because that would be an entirely different premise of the show. Watch something else if you need to.

Wow, he couldn't handle people disagreeing with him so he deleted his posts. That's exactly what I would expect of someone from that generation.

I don't respect you, so I won't debate you.

That's exactly what an old person would say when they know they are losing. Also, I don't need you to "respect" me. You remind me of my parents. They are also completely oblivious to how much damage they are causing with their ignorance.

There's a reason you deleted your posts. You know they were moronic at best.

So you go on not "respecting" me. I'm totally fine with that. 

These tings are important, but we are jaded because we have to take on double to even quadruple the amount of debt just to make a salary that hasnt changed since the 90s although the cost of living is skyrocketing in many places, not to mention more of us are going to school so we are competing against hundreds for the same job. when you think about it, american culture has really changed to center around youth in the past 30-40 years; maybe the reluctance to grow up come from that.

Hmm, that is a good point. I do think that a lot of the time, their lives seem quite immature compared to a regular thirty something. Yet at the same time, I kinda love that even though they're in their 30's - they still don't know what the hell they're doing! That makes me feel better about in my 30's and sometimes feeling like I don't know what I'm doing.
Can I just say that at first, I found the Birdie character quite annoying but now, I just think she's the bomb! Gus kinda pisses me off a lot, but then again, so does Mickey. I think I'm rooting for Mickey though. She seems more gritty and genuine.
What are your thoughts?

reply

How would you feel about Mickey if she weren't gorgeous?

reply

I actually don't find Mickey that attractive. She's a little gross in the way she doesn't look after herself (physically and all the rest). I don't find Gus attractive physically at all. Yet, if he was physically good-looking and still acted the way he did, I'd still find him as annoying.
I'm guessing you think Mickey is hot and hence she gets away with more?

Unfortunately that's a hypothetical that we'll never know 100% for sure. I would love to see a show where their actions were reversed and see if people still thought Gus was the worst.

That's not even debatable, lol. Crazy-pants is far worse than Gus. If I hadn't seen the show and all I had to go by were the IMDB forums I'd assume Gus was the Antichrist and Mickey was a wonderful girl who is having hard times but it's not her fault but that's okay b/c she's owning up to the things that aren't her fault even though they are her fault. (huh?)

They do seem much more like 20 somethings than 30 somethings. I thought they were 20s until their ages were mentioned and i was surprised.

It's refreshing to see a show about 30 somethings who are still lost...I know I sure am.
