Anyone Else Dislike Bertie?

She seemed likable at first, but I really grew to dislike her a lot. She came across as passive-aggressive and judgmental.

It started during her and Gus' date. The beginning was undeniably awkward, no question, but she made it so much worse after talking about her job. After she tells him what it's like, he says something to the effect of "It's nice hearing focus groups talked about like that, because I've only ever heard people bad mouth them." She then responds by looking at him as if he's an ass and saying "Let's just look at the menu." When he's concerned about her being cold and comes up with the idea of switching tables (the place wasn't even busy, so it shouldn't have been a problem) she uses that as a reason why the date went south. After they get their meals, she's visibly disgusted by the super rare steak and then is going to force herself to eat it. Did he go on about her eating like a bird? Sure, but I see that as trying to get her to admit that she didn't want to actually eat it. On top of all that, she excuses herself to the bathroom to send Mickey the text about not wanting a second date. Never mind the fact that she sends it to the wrong person (Mickey and Gus, those names are so similar), but sending that text during the middle of the date served absolutely no purpose. It wasn't like she texted Mickey to tell her she was going to cut the date short and for her to go along with it by pretending to be sick so she could rush home. Something like that could have waited until she got home.

Also, to be clear, I'm not particularly fond of Gus, so it isn't like I think he's some sort of angel.

I found her to be judgmental while she was talking to Gus' friend and he told her that he slept with his parents until he was twelve. Obviously that's rather old, but he gave her a fairly valid reason why, i.e., watching too many horror movies. It wasn't like he still slept in his parents' bed. Yet, after he says that she gives him the same look she gave Gus after the conversation about her job.

Honestly, she seems like the one who is fake nice.

Hey, how about the fact that I fought an Avenger and didn't die?

Well, Gus is a bit of a dick. Like, he's supposed to be nice but he actually is pretty fake nice and I thought her reaction to the date was totally justifiable. I really like Bertie.

LOL. She is completely out of that guy's league. Do you realize how unlikely it is that any woman in Bertie's position in the real world would continue to see a physically unhealthy, unemployed grown man who openly admits to having slept with his parents until middle school?

Despite all of his red flags, she still seems to be into him because he's a nice guy, which makes her a nice girl, which kind of disproves your theory that she's "fake nice". I'm not crazy about Bertie, but she's leaps and bounds better than emotionally-infantile Micky or perpetually passive-aggressive Gus.

reply

Not unlikely at all actually. Bertie mentions in the series that she's attracted to chubby guys before she meets him. I see a ton of schlub guys in the real world dating pretty girls. It's a matter of having the balls to approach them. Not to mention, Gertie is cute enough but it's not like she's a 10 or anything. I wouldn't think twice if I saw them as a couple in real life.

reply

It's not necessarily unlikely based on their physical traits. I also said there were many things about his personal life that are unlikely for a girl like her to be attracted to.

Or she was faking it.....which proves the theory you said was disproved.

reply

Glad I'm not the only one!

I don't find her nearly as charming as everyone around her. She has this unnerving earnestness that's just kinda annoying. I also don't think her and the chubbster are an unbelievable pairing.

reply

"Unnerving earnestness."
Well said. Couldn't quite put my finger on it, but there it is. I'm sure it would make me uncomfortable in real life but I can't say I find it or Bertie annoying here.

Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

how was she fake nice to gus' friend. she bought him a shirt at the studio tour and invited him over to hang lol?

reply

I thought she was meant to be the female version of Gus. Acts nice as a matter of course.

reply

I can't say if I like or dislike Bertie yet. She seems fairly normal compared to the other two. The only scene I hated was when she was sitting with Mickey and Mickey's friend discussing how they dated "unattractive men" as a phase.
It's not like Bertie's super gorgeous or anything to look at.

reply

Bertie isn't fake nice shes just nice.

The difference between Bertie and Gus is that if Bertie doesnt like or agree with something, she just smiles and says something nice. Whereas Gus goes 'yeahhhhhhhhh..' for about 5 seconds and then asks a question that basically insinuates that he disagrees with what the other person is saying because he sees outright disagreement as being too confrontational.

I liked her better in the second season. They didn't overuse her character and when they did use her she was funny.

reply

she's much more likable in season 2.
