(Spoilers) I was POSITIVE it would turn out that...

I was positive that in the end it would turn out that the Blade Runner reality was just another simulation, and he was really just a fat gamer. The movie should've ended with his mom pulling the plug on his VR headset and telling him to get a job. I mean, come on! He drives a flying car in Neo-Paris and his job is killing people. How is that not a video game?

Instead we get some lame ending where he really is a hard-boiled Harrison Ford lookalike, but he goes back to his World of Warcraft and justifies himself giving up on reality completely. Boring, but par for the course with this movie.

that would have been a good ending but should be done in a serious way.

But he is right, the world is fucked up and as the current state is more or less self sustainable (as in you can live), so no reason to really live in this world, if you can escape. The people left the world on their own decision and I can really imagine that most of them just gave up. It's much nicer to live your life in a fantasy escape of your choice where you can be something. No, this is imo very realistic.
