The Letter I Wrote to Amazon/IMDB owner, Jeff Bezos

This is what I wrote. You can write anything. It can be super brief. I just think letting him know personally could help. His email is: [email protected] And he says he wants to hear from people.

Dear Mr Bezos,

Please read the following article, it says almost everything I'd like to say:

https://news.boxofficebuz.com/article/why-imdb-s-message-board-shut-down-is-misguided

I've been a heavy Amazon Prime user, have your credit card, post product reviews, etc. But your decision to take away the IMDB message boards has me seriously rethinking my commitment to your company.

I do have two suggestions that could keep IMDB users like me happy and be profitable for you at the same time.

1. Use volunteer moderators (see NextDoor.com, the local neighborhoods site, as an example). If a moderator is abusing the established guidelines, they will weed themselves out based on members' complaints.

2. Unobtrusive advertising. (Again, see NextDoor.com's advertising). Ads are inserted as a message topic on the board and it's entirely the users' choice whether they're interested in clicking on the message or not. For example, security devices and home automation systems are popular ads on the Nextdoor site. On IMDB: A network or cable site could buy a message spot with a link to their newest show. If a user is interested in that show, they can click on the link. Very easy. Amazon could post links to DVDs available on Amazon and Amazon Prime Video. Ads would be limited so as not to overpower the board. I used to work in advertising, so if there were even just one or two ads on each of the thousands of boards that IMDB hosts, that would be easy money. It's a built-in demographic for Networks, streaming sites and movie studios for advertising their new shows or movies directly to their audience. I'd take that sales job as a no-brainer. How can you and IMDB pass up that opportunity?

I really hope you'll reconsider your decision to close down the message boards. I and many others feel we'll no longer have a reason to use the site since the info IMDB provides can be found in many other places. It's the interactive experience of getting questions answered, comparing notes, reviewing content, etc. that draws us to your site. With that feature gone, I'm just as happy using Wikipedia or Rotten Tomatoes or any number of alternative information sites.

Thanks for your consideration,

xxxxx xxxxx

An excellent letter centrd, and many thanks for going to the trouble to write it.

I have had a look at Amazon's finances and I am not sure that the company will be around much longer. It is capitalised at just under $400 billions and expects that this year's profit will be around $5.7 billions. That works out at one and a half cents on the dollar, which is a deeply unimpressive performance.

Bezos runs an impressive operation, but in terms of cash to the bank he should not be running a pie cart on Seattle's 7th Avenue.

Wow! That's crazy.

I have heard in the past that Amazon has been on shaky ground at times, but I have to say, I'd be shocked if Amazon closed soon. Partly because they've been opening all these distribution centers and just opened some near me. But hey, anything's possible especially with financials like that.

I had to disable my adblocker on IMDB today, and it was the first time I realized they had any advertising at all. Banner ad at the top. Really underutilizing their potential there, if you ask me. I've always thought IMDB seemed kind of antiquated and wondered why they didn't do more to update. Hmmm...maybe there really is more going on with this shut-down than meets the eye? Like that article said, I don't think closing their boards is going to help them drive people to the main site.

What are these "trolls" people are referring to? Is it message board lingo?

Troll is internet shorthand for someone you disagree with.

reply

Trolls are people who incite arguments by baiting other posters with inflammatory (ie. racist/crude/derogatory) language, etc. They not only bait, but attack other posters, calling them names and behaving in other juvenile ways. Many probably are juveniles or just generally disturbed people who like to make people feel bad. (the very worst kind of karma, according to Buddhists.)

They're basically miserable people who think upsetting other people will make them feel better. The joke's on them though, in the long run, they only make themselves more miserable.

I too e-mailed Jeff Bezos at [email protected]. However this is the reply that I got:

Hello Marla,

I'm Bhaskar from Amazon.com. Jeff Bezos received your email, and I'm responding on his behalf.

We appreciate that you took the time to share your concerns with us. Although IMDb.com is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, it is a separate site and operates independently.

We recommend you contact IMDb’s support staff directly via the form located at http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/contact_form with any concerns you might have regarding their message boards.

Thanks for your understanding.

Best regards,

Bhaskar A.
Thank you.

Dear Sir,
Please reconsider the decision to shutdown IMDB's Message board. I am very big fan of IMDB and always visit the site to check out both new as well as old movies, series.
Ratings and reviews of movies and series help me but message boards are also equally important as I can ask fellow members about anything that I may have to discuss about movies or series.
Same thing is not possible on facebook or other sites as facebook has its own demerits that I wont go into now.
Please dont force us to use other social sites and let us continue to use message boards.
Thanks
