At first I thought they casted him because they wanted the audience to immediately look at Patricks mom as positive because she was going to be a new storyline. But she obviously didn't stay in the picture long. Kind of an odd choice for casting and pulled me out of the movie for a moment. Anyone think they should've just casted some random person who looked non-threatening?

V. weird indeed to have him be in only a few minutes of the entire movie.
shareBroderick is a long time friend and colleague of Director Kenneth Lonnergan. He's collaborated with him in the past on other movies and plays. I think they went to college together.
So while you may think it was a bad bit of casting, i don't think it's completely random.
His surprise appearance in this movie totally distracted me too...I couldn't even pay attention to the scene because I was suddenly watching Ferris Bueller. Bad casting for that character.
shareIt took me out of the movie cause I immediately thought of the person (or persons?) that he accidentally hit and killed with his car IRL, which seemed similar to what the main character in this movie did, accidentally killing.
shareManchester by the Sea is perhaps my favourite American film of the last few years but that one scene with Broderick is the only part which felt awkward and out of place.
I have never much liked Broderick, the exceptions being Election and You Can Count on Me (also by Lonergan).
