I was thinking of the Babadook the whole time. He even figured out that if you realize you're not afraid, you can defeat him just like the Babadook, but that little revelation took him nowhere. He seemed to forget about all that at the end. I was hoping for a climax of him being the first to finally break the curse and banish the demon, but no, evil always has to win.
