No love from the Academy?

It's no surprise that it didn't break into the top categories but it really should have managed, at the very least, nominations for cinematography, production design and costumes, all of which were exquisite.

However South Korea is at least partly to blame for not submitting it as their entry for best foreign language film that year (they chose The Age of Shadows). The Handmaiden was pretty widely beloved and acclaimed and very possibly could have made the shortlist, which would have given it visibility to perhaps break into some other categories.

Clearly the SK film board have since learnt from their mistakes.
