This is so overrated.

Sure the cinematography and production design were great. But the narrative was standard convoluted Korean storytelling, the characters were over the top and totally uninteresting, and the twists grew tiresome really quickly. Am I missing something?

Not really, the film just didn't work/connect with you, it's as simple as that. It seems that you really enjoy Chang Dong Lee's films instead of the other more popular Korean films; you've got pretty cool and unique taste.

Maybe it didn't work for you, but it's not overrated. It absolutely deserves all the praise it's getting.

Agree 100% OP

Started of with lots of promise and then descended into garbage

I had to FF the last 30 minutes. I couldn't believe how bad it was

It's a good movie, but definitely overrated, probably because it's an asian movie.

Just watched it after watching and really liking Decision to Leave, and think it is very over rated. It has some very good moments and is nicely shot, but is very convoluted and a bit daft... I nearly gave up on it until the Twist at the end of Act 1 but that was very good so I counted watching, but it didn't really go on much from there.
Decision To Leave 9/10, The Handmaiden 6.5/10
