Concerns.

Honestly, this show is yet another representation of the consistency of DC to me. Not great, but not terrible. This show has me hooked because of Melissa's amazing performance and of course, Martian Manhunter (who we're unlikely to see in any movies).

The move to the CW concerns me though. The showrunners concern me too, but that's a different story. The special effects on this show are obviously a bit more vs. that of The Flash or LoT. Now I know the bigger budget for CBS was due to location, so as someone who isn't too knowledgable of how much special effects tie into a budget, I could be wrong to be concerned about this. But the special effects were already more silver-screen level vs. movie level and weren't always the most realistic. I found them to be impressive, not like Game of Thrones impressive of course, but compared to the days of Smallville they showed how far CGI technology has come. This show is definitely better than 90% of Smallville, might I add... I just have to give credit where it's due since growing up with that show is how I got introduced to Superman and DC and how I became such a huge fan.

Anyways, between changing location and casting issues, are less special effects going to make this show look cheap you think? I still have high hopes for this show. I love the character of Supergirl, always have, and now that we get another version of Superman I'm even more excited. But I just feel like this show is going to become more of a disappointment to the majority than it already has been. With all the changes, I don't see how it can be avoided.

Maybe that's just me. Thoughts?

Less special effects? No. There won't be less special effects.

They saved a lot of money moving it, not only to Vancouver for filming, but to the CW as well since they now no longer have to pay the licensing fees for the DC characters. The W part of CW being Warner Brothers and they own DC. CBS had to pay to use Supergirl, the 'S' and everything involved with that, Martian Manhunter, and every other character that appears in the comics. So actually they seem to have a bit more money for things like effects. And it will still be the same effects team involved with the series.

But the show was a WB production all along, so wouldn't the money for the effects come from WB rather than CBS, meaning CBS paying for the rights to the characters wouldn't effect WB's budget for the show?

reply

That's a fair point. I wasn't aware they were having to pay so many licensing costs though. I assumed WB just became more lenient with the TV universe after their movies weren't as successful as they planned.

This isn't something I've really read up on though. Thanks for your comment. That and the (somewhat cheesy, but cute) TV spot give me some hope.

My concerns are different, being in Vancouver.

All roads lead to truth if you're willing to travel honestly.

reply

Eh, maybe it's just me but *beep* happens no matter what you're filming and where you're filming it. I know the change in location has affected certain character appearances, though. That concerns me for sure.

reply

Sure, sh-t happens, but piles of library books destroyed isn't the same as a scuffed wall which can be repainted after. Obviously, that wasn't intentional, but I thought it made for a nice little side point.

The special effects on the flash were superior to those of Supergirl. I say expect an improvement.

My concern is the writing. As long as it never turns Arrow bad it should be okay.

Only loss is loosing Cat, Lucy and Maxwell to limited appearances.

CW love triangles sigh no

I haven't even bothered with season 4 of Arrow. I finally started watching it, got really into the first couple seasons, then found my interest dying with the quality of the show.

With the mediocre quality of Supergirl, LoT, and the Flash season 2, along with the just plain sad quality of Arrow nowadays I wonder if the showrunners are stretching themselves too thin. Time will tell, I guess.

"loosing Cat" ?? If Calista Flockhart has a smaller presence, the show loses A LOT -- she is impressively, emmy - award good in this show (Better than Aly McBeal, in my opinion). She shows so much with her eyes, and runs her lines really subtly, every delivery almost perfect.

She is also emblematic of the consistently good-looking women this show displays, from Alex to Lucy to Siobhan to, of course, Kara.

I worry about a diminished presence for Cat, if what you say is accurate.

Season 1 was filmed in Los Angeles. For season 2, production has moved to Vancouver. Calista Flockhart didn’t want to move to Canada, so Cat's role in the show has been reduced. She will appear in the first two episodes of the season, and a few others later in the season, but she won't be a regular as she was in season 1.
Within the storyline of the show, this is being dealt with by giving Kara a new boss (Snapper Carr, played by Ian Gomez), rather than reporting directly to Cat as she did in season 1.

The absence of Cat will be felt and in a way I am going to miss it. It won't feel the same.

Unlike many others, I love seeing Kara deal with every day life struggles at work. It makes this show different than Flash and Arrow. Now with Winn moving to the DEO. It seems the show is just going to turn into all the other DC shows. Basically the home base of operations and Winn serving as the Felicity and Cisco.

I might be the only one who would of been happy if they kept the Supergirl/Alex/John Jones threesome at the DEO. I kinda would of been happy if Winn never joined and either died or just stayed away.

Seem's they just put the same type of character's into the same role in every single DC show. Seriously nothing new here. Winn, Felicity and Cisco all serve the same purpose in each now. Sigh.

I actually do hope we see Kara dealing with her job, and they do not after 1 season suddenly have her work for the DEO fulltime.

I guess we shall have to wait and see. The additions of Maggie and Lena may be the only interesting new additions I am looking forward too. But no way will they fill the void left by Cat as a presence in the series.

reply

What? Less Cat? At first I didn't like Cat, but she grew on me. Now I can't imagine the show without her.

I do believe the CW are better suited for the super hero genre, however, their female characters over time become quite annoying, whiny and underdeveloped. While that may not be the case for Supergirl as it's her show/story, I gotta say that I was really disappointed with the way she was portrayed in the fight club 2.0. It seemed like she was trying really hard to be likable and cute (which she is anyway, which is why she doesn't need to really try so hard) and it made me cringe, and almost seemed a bit like the typical dumb blonde, like how she pointed at Grodd and was like "Uh...monkey". I'm a bit concerned with any changes that may be made to her character's personality.

This is all coming from a die-hard comic book GUY, who actually sat through all of Supergirl season one, and while I can't say the show is great (nor is it terrible), the biggest reason I watch and enjoy the show is because of Melissa Benoist. Aside from her being beautiful, she is a great actress who is extremely likable, convincing and brings this positive/hopeful vibe/presence to the role which very few can, so I'm really concerned with the way her talent is utilized.

I started with high hopes with concerns of pc bs getting in the way... after season one my concerns were completely realized as correct, at this point I have low hopes they might fire that idiot writer who handled superman's writing in season one as they have to be the biggest idiot on the planet (trying to squeeze him in despite not having warner's permision to really use him, so his appearances end up being quick blury shots/texts, getting controlled by a mind control device that shouldn't be able to control him off camera as he is krytonian and then after that reveal he still doesn't end up facing Kara and then when the device is destroyed he goes into a convenient coma til the problems resolved (was their previous job writing for soap operas in the late 80's early 90s?)).

reply

The biggest problem with this show is the mediocre and uninspired writing. Just like the other DC CW shows.
