The wife/mom begins to paint a portrait of the father (Aaron Paul) being this abusive monster, but in reality, she's possibly the one responsible for the kid's injury.

That's what they want you to believe.

Seems to me they want viewers to believe the dad is the bad guy. Therefore, he has to be a red herring.

No they are making us believe both parents are bad. May be child have some psychological problems.

according to what i've read online (book spoilers) it is the mother that is the villain of the film. i wish they had not included that one moment where the mother's entire facial expression/demeanor (when she's talking to the unconscious in the bed) and the words she says to the boy couldn't be any more telling. i'm pissed they included that one spoiler shot of the mom in the trailer.
