Mom is killed by the monster and the little girl then kills it with fire.

Think for yourself and question authority.

The monster kills the mother but it turns out that the little had paid the monster to do it (a pack of wolves if I remember correctly) because she was fed up with her alcoholism and her hair color. Then the monster and the girl go eat what remains of the wolf.
