...I'm probably in the minority on this, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It did not go they way I thought it would go, based on what I saw in the trailer---and that's a good thing! Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine were brilliant, IMHO! I shall be watching both of their careers with great interest!
I agree with you. I thought it was excellant. It was totally not what I expected. The movie is about the dysfuntional relationship between the mother and daughter with The Monster as a backdrop. Very much like The Babadook but the acting was so much better.
There are at least 4 scenes in the movie that brought me to tears. The mother drinks a bottle of spirits, throws up in the toilet and passes out on the bathroom floor. The daughter finds her, lies down next her mother and puts her arm around her. Tears were rolling down my cheeks.
If it was just a bunch of, pot smoking, horny teenagers who crashed on the country road the film would have been garbage. However it's the 2 actors that portray the movie and daughter that make that film.
Agreed as well. I am disappointed that this film has not gotten better reviews. I think it has one of the best character dynamics of horror movies that came out last year. In other high rated movies from last year, such as Don't Breathe, Green Room, and the Witch had thin character development compared to The Monster. Those scenes you mention got to me as well. I don't expect to cry during a horror movie, but I did during this one.

I completely agree... this little girls acting was far beyond her years.... it accurately showed the role reversal when a child has an addict as a parent and the film had me in tears most of the way through It had a very powerful story line and a film that I shall not forget any time soon
I definitely agree. A lot of people did not enjoy this film but I found it to be very effective and enjoyable - metaphors or not. I thought Zoe and Ella were both wonderful and didn't feel like I was watching an hour and a half of whimpering and crying as other posters had stated.
Yeah... I've just finished the seance and I'm very disturbed... I'll tell ya it struck too close to home guys... My mom used to drink a lot, there was no father.. many scenes were so .. *beep*.. *beep* man. They did a good job with portraying such relationship. The ending I think is almost metaphorical. I was even convinced that there will be some twist like there was neither no monster nor forest and mother was a monster, everything was in daughter's mind. It was metaphorical anyway.. Good movie. I give it 7/10. Now maybe a cigarette and some tears ech.
