Superior acting outshines the rest of the package...

Strong, believable, chemistry-filled lead performances make this one worthy of a watch.

Competent practical and creature effects, though could have been better lit. Zero shaky cam and few to no jump scares are other positives though.

Give it a shot :)

A solid, honest 6 from me, FWIW.

I agree about the acting and chemistry--really good performances. The movie is primarily about the relationship between mother and daughter, not the monster. I rated it higher than you did.

reply

You know what? Your post made me go back and watch it again. I was originally torn on the whole rating thing - wanted to go 7 but just didn't feel right due to some less than great creature effects and such.

You're right - the acting pushes this one over the top. I went back and up'd my vote.

cheers!

Very true. I thought the monster was symbolic of the mother's addiction. Similar to The Babadook in a way.

reply

The Babadook is waaaay better this film was utter trash and totally wasted potential.

reply

I agree. This movie's lead actress was horrible. No chops. And the movie was doodoo in comparison

reply

Babadook, superior = yes.

This one was "utter trash"? Absolutely not in my book. No shortage of really horrible films out there, especially in this genre, but this one certainly does not deserve to be lumped with garbage. Problems in the film, sure. But definitely not "trash".

cheers!

Ugh. Couldn't disagree more. Completely unbelievable and useless mom character. Pretty sad when a young girl - who spends most her time crying btw- is more believable. Awful, tedious movie.

reply

Agree! The movie was somewhat suspenseful and very much predictable, but the acting was superb.
