Please don't be a hater

I don't understand why so many people hate this movie. I'm a die-hard horror movie fan and nothing scares me anymore, but this one was at least suspenseful.

Allow me to put this in perspective... Too many horror movies these days are incredibly lame. For example, the latest Blair Witch movie, The Forest, Lights Out, Zoombies, and American Conjuring (cringe). These movies are filled with tons of jump scares because there isn't anything else in these movies that is truly horrifying; there's just no substance. But, this movie was horrifying simply because the characters were paralyzed with fear and you felt that fear knowing the monster could attack at any minute. With no weapons and no way out, the mother couldn't protect her child, no help was coming, and it seemed inevitable that they were going to die.

So, the screenwriter of The Monster didn't explain where the monster came from. Do we really need to know? Sometimes "less is more." The movie provoked a good bit of emotions, too, because the mother went from thinking that her daughter was simply an inconvenience in her life to later sacrificing herself to save the child. Was this as good as "The Descent" or Ridley Scott's "Alien" movie? No. But it was far better than most I've seen lately. It is what it is: good entertainment. :)

I, for one, am a huge fan and follower of art-house/independent horror, as well as just about anything that A24 Studios puts out.

This was not a good film. At all. My complaints have been addressed in the bad reviews that you're seeing, with the only saving grace being the child actress.

I actually didn't mind the fact that the creature stayed relatively hidden for the first act and into the second. The buildup, if done properly, will surpass any level of creature design, usually CGI, but this one was like a guy in a Godzooki costume (yes, it's that bad). Any level of tension was quickly erased as soon as the creature was shown...it was like "Oh...well this is unfortunate" as soon as it appears in full.

Anywho...there are far better films within the genre, far better in A24's lineup and there are far better ways to spend your money that sit through tripe like this.

3/10

I dunno, I just thought it was f&*kin brutal, the metaphor monster was almost besides the point. All the crying and yelling, the horrible relationship between the mother and daughter and then one gets to watch the other DIE...it was so painful and heavy and...naked. That kind of sh*t gets to me, I'm replaying the credits right now over and over just to soak up the beautiful miasma of total dejection. Like damn, man. What a sad movie...

Good horror is rare and difficult; otherwise everybody would be making it. And yes there is much tripe out there, but this movie is not tripe by any means. I know this because I watch all horror movies and this ain't that bad; its not exceptionally good either but definitely not tripe. I might even put it in my top 10 or so of the year. And to put that into perspective, the two best horror movies I've seen this year are "Shelley" and "The Blackcoat's Daughter." How about you? What did you like?

I cannot understand why anyone who likes this type of genre would hate this movie. I am a classic and modern horror fan and this was the best I have seen in a long while. The acting was flawless. Yes the creature effects were somewhat dated but the point mostly was the relationship. Troubled people who get thrust into an extraordinary situation and how they handle it.

Lights Out wasn't great, but a masterpiece in comparison with this

We don't have a dog. That was just some really violent sex.
