You can read the script online (and it's better than the show)

I actually read the script for this pilot before watching it, just out of curiosity, how things translated, etc. Definitely recommend a read. You can find a download link on this page:

Ben Watkins's writing is pretty top notch, and you can tell he had a strong vision for the show. But in the final cut of the episode, some of his best stuff got trimmed down, switched around, or totally cut. Things get lost in translation all the time on TV and film. Certain things always have to change a bit for time restraints/practicality, etc. There are some moments of greatness, like the final few minutes, where Marc Forster seemed to capture the mood Watkins was going for (despite switching the structure around). But almost every other scene felt like a slightly weak representation of what was on the page. Still good for sure, but slightly off, like it was lacking in tension and atmosphere. Hopefully if the show gets picked up, we can get some stronger directors.

I recommend the novel Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee about personal shame, victimization, and the difficulty of communication, among others. (It also won the Booker Prize and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature).

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll be checking that out.

Interesting.

The pilot episode did seem rather dull, drawn out, and at times lacking crispness. So much potential, but it really wasn't very good, even by "pilot" standards.

One has to blame either the scriptwriters or the director, as the cast was exemplary.
