Discuss: Did the amount of '87 show references hurt or help the film?

IMO, while it was great to finally have characters like Kraang, Bebop and Rocksteady on the big screen, I personally felt like there were too many characters and references crammed in there. Not only did it overcrowd the film, but it felt like the writers were relying too much on nostalgic callbacks to try and force the the fans to like it.

I guess it was marginally better than the last movie, which was basically spitting in the face of all established TMNT mythology, but it still wasn't good.

But I would like to hear your opinions on it.

I think the problem was that they banked too much on the nostalgia factor. Actually they entirely banked on it, for the sake of keeping people interested, and thought that it alone would win over audiences, particularly those who were turned off by the previous film. They seemed to take a "nostalgia will save us" route, and while it did play like an hour-and-40-minute episode of the show, it wasn't enough to save them.

Logan, buddy. It's me, Deadpool! I shot youuuuuu....

It reminded me of that Jungle Book sequel Disney made in 2003. The whole plot was exactly the same as the original, and they kept reminding you that it was. This was exactly the same.

"Hey, do you remember this character/scene? That means it's good, right? Please tell us you remember it!" Uh, yeah, we do remember the original show (even though I wasn't even born at the time) and if we want to be reminded of the original, we'll just watch the original rather than this soul-less rehash.

The homage to the original cartoon (which is really what made turtles famous in the first place) was the ONLY part of the movie that was enjoyable.

I detested the first one, and they made leaps and bounds improving it. However, poor writing and weak, inexplicable plot points still resulted in an overall meh movie. But Krang was amazing!
